Hello, I’m AJ from New York and I am a gay 21 year old man. I’m new here and wanted to ask a few things from here. I have muscular dystrophy and I’m in a wheelchair full time,I live with my father and dating and hooking up has been such a struggle and living under his roof makes it impossible. I really want to meet up with people and have occasional dates and hooking up but when I get the courage and time I find out their place is not accessible and I can’t host myself because my Dad is very homophobic and does not like people in his home. I’m not sure what to do, because I meet a lot of interested people but it is always put to a halt due to accessibility. Any advice would be great.

That must difficult for you regardless. Have you ever thought about the possibility of using a hotel?

That's definitely a tough situation. I'm guessing you're in NYC? Hotels are expensive, as is getting your own place. (and most guys wouldn't want to pay for a place to have a casual hookup.) Apart from meeting someone who lives in an accessible building, are there any accessible bath houses or gay bars with dark rooms? Not as intimate as a private space of course. Or, do you have any friends who live somewhere accessible that you can confide in and ask to use their place for a couple hours every once in a while?

Oh no, I live in western New York to specify I think there may be some accessible bath houses. I do not have any friends I’d feel comfortable asking.

If you want to date someone and their place isn't accessible, perhaps you could start by dating in a third place that is accessible, like a diner, a caffé or a nice park. If it moves to sex then perhaps something like an accessible hotel or airbnb could be a solution. If you're very close then perhaps he won't mind to carry you up stairs to their apartment. But in the end if you truly want to be independent you'll probably have to move out and live on your own. I don't know how it is with assistance but I believe we have many MD guys here who live independent and have their care taker come in.
