1972 Scarborough, Ontario — JACKIE, a small Terrier, had been partially paralyzed after a fight with a much bigger dog and was about to be put to sleep. However, the Connolly family couldn't bring themselves to have her put down. Ironically, two years later Jackie saved her owners by alerting them to a fire that destroyed their home.
1974 St. Boniface, Manitoba — BABY, a deaf-mute cat, is credited with saving the life of her owner who had suffered a heart attack. Baby woke the man's wife by repeatedly throwing herself on the lady's chest. When she awoke, she discovered her husband had collapsed in another room.
1976 Montreal, Quebec — GAMMA, a Labrador Retriever Seeing-Eye dog, saved his master, Marcel Daigneault, when he pushed Mr. Daigneault out of the path of a truck speeding through an intersection against a traffic light. Gamma was badly injured in the incident and required extensive veterinarian care.
1990 Sault Ste. Marie — GRIZZLY, a four-year-old Siberian Husky, was credited with saving the life of his owner, Paul Guitard, during a vicious attack by a bear in the woods near his home. For seven hours, Grizzly fought against the bear's repeated attempts to reach Mr. Guitard, who had climbed a tree to safety.
Calgary, Alberta — SHANA, an eight-year-old Newfoundland dog, saved her owner, Dorothy Laurin, from drowning when she slipped into a torrent of freezing rain water outside her home during a freak storm in Calgary. Despite a fear of water, Shana swam to her owner's rescue with no hesitation and directed her to safety.
1991 Duncan, British Columbia — TARA, an 11-year-old German Shepherd owned by Mike Langer, was the only one to hear a young man calling for help after being thrown from his motorcycle while riding along a railroad track. Tara's frantic behaviour convinced her owner's father, Helmut Langer, to follow her to where the man lay critically injured on the railway tracks. When the train raced past the accident site shortly after, the man was safely on his way to a hospital.
1992 Mirror, Alberta — HUSTLER, a three-year-old German Shepherd is credited with saving the life of his owner, Debbie Inions. After a fall from her horse left Debbie seriously injured and unable to move, Hustler repeatedly fought against vicious attacks by two preying coyotes until they were discovered nine hours later.
Port McNeil, British Columbia — TIA, a six-year-old Labrador, owned by Sean Lingl, saved the lives of her owner and his fishing companion when a leak in Sean's small dingy caused the boat to capsize. Weighed down by bulky clothing and equipment the men could only cling to the side of the boat. Tia, despite having only three legs, pulled on the mooring rope attached to the boat and guided them through the freezing, rough water to shore.
1993 Ottawa, Ontario — JAZZ and LITTLE BITS, two American Cocker Spaniels saved the life of their owner, Susan Anderson, after she suffered an epileptic seizure while jogging in a park near Kemptville. Jazz laid on top of her collapsed owner to keep her warm, while Little Bits' frantically barked to alert Susan's jogging companion to where she was lying.
