i agree w/claire that these exercizes probably mostly just generate pity, since it does take time-years maybe-to gain full perspective and to figure things out.

I just got to see the FX show 30 Days on being in a chair. To start off let me tell you i was so suprised to see the Dr and PT's that were on that show were the same ones I had in rehab (Yes I went to Baylor inst. for rehab. in Dallas Texas) They did a really good job of showing that it is hard being in a chair but it is not inpossable and that there is a full life ahead of people with SCI's I even saw the guy tell his momma that it is ok to ask a wheeler questions and not to treet them any diffrent than a normal person. I think they did a nice job of letting people kknow that We (Wheelers) are people just like everyone else. it was not years in a chair but it was enough for one man to realise that wheelers are people too. and having that on film and shown all around the world I think can do nothing but good things for wheelers. if you have not seen it i highly reccomend watching it.

I actually don't think 'pity' is the first thing that people will take from watching something like that...I disagree with that. Indeed, thirty days is NOWHERE near living as a real wheeler - nevermind people that have been living 30+ YEARS as a wheeler.
I think it does generate some basic awareness though. Perhaps one person watches the show, and perhaps learns about something subtle that might affect accessability. That person then has a mental image about what kind of obstacle a situation could make, and then applies it to their own life, such as being more cognisant of barriers in the workplace, and working to eliminate them. So, I don't think pity is necessarily a good word...perhaps empathetic is better.

I'm with you, Wind!! I don't think 'pity' is the dominate emotion, but I do think it's a little overwhelming for the average AB. Look, when I go to a grocery store people are blown away, but down inside 'I dig it' coz they're seeing a small slice of a life they can't really get their head around. The more they see me; the less 'remarkable' I become!

One of the guys that they showed on the show had a AB girlfriend. I think that Might be like a total eye opener to poeple. They even talked about sex for a wheeler. Do you all think she might be a dev?...
