my understanding is that the dis folks of norway, denmark, sweden and finland have it very well indeed. but then with all those hot scandinavian chicks around, how could things be bad? i mean, except for living in a deep freeze most of the year...

So Chan, does this change your career plans? Actually....a little, yes. Since being here, I've had serious doubts about whether I'd like to continue working with both the Russian language and people. I'm graduating in a year and will have to make a big decision, either accept scholarship funding (I'm in the top 15% of my graduating class) and continue on to get my Masters or.....perhaps pursue some other possible job opportunities I think would be fun. I don't want to continue tattooing because I'm ready for something else, and it's not something I really find that enjoyable. So aside from tattooing or being a possible Russian interpreter/translator, Andy and I are thinking about, haha, opening up a Cupcake Shop. Fo'real. It's still just something we only talk about and no definite plans have been made, but it's actually a serious possibility. Other than being a crazed cupcake lady, I have some pretty good ideas for a line of shoes I'd like to look into getting made. From what Andy tells me, it would involve a trip to China to get everything set up, organized, planned, etc (for cheap). But I'm pretty positive that, in the end, it would definitely be worth it if even just a few boutiques pick up the line. Or I could just be a starving artist and live off of the little that I get for various paintings I do. But....I don't really like the sound of that and would want to just keep it a hobby and something that's enjoyable rather than something I HAVE to do. So who knows. Last resort-- Animal Wrangler.

Pictoral evidence seems to lend that you have some sort of natural talent for animal wrangling!
...actually all of the ideas swirled 'round would actually be quite viable in the area I live - the local market caters and thrives quite well to small, unique, distinct businesses.

about cupcakes .... here in New York cupcake shops are multiplying rapidly. The trend is a response to the pace of the city and the stress everyone is living under. Cupcake shops market old-fashioned comfort. They push butter and cream sweetness as the antidote to all that alcohol and espresso. They also offer a controlled dose of indulgence, which appeals to those who are exhausted from trying to be no-carb gym rats.
I know what you mean about wanting to do painting as a hobby rather than try to make it lucrative. The stress that arises when it becomes a job really sucks.

i love this...it's so hyper-analytical, NYC, grad school; how about people like to eat cupcakes because they taste REALLY GOOD! and people will BUY THEM if given the opportunity. i'd pay $2.50 for a fresh chocolate cupcake right now...or a german chocolate one...or a yellow cake w/chocolate frosting...or....

I thought the fashion gods had banned nylons under shorts........... Pfft, not in Russia. I swear to god, it's like it's 1994 here. Girls wont be seen without their Scrunchies (I tried to insert a barf smiley face, but it's not available here) and it's completely acceptable for even the smartest-dressed girl to wear pantyhose with open-toed shoes (another barf smiley would come in handy here). Besides A LOT of makeup and fried hair from being dyed, permed, whathaveyou, too many times, very high heels are pretty much all that are worn by Russian girls. I feel so frumpy in my flats, which were/are very much in style in the U.S., when I was in the UK, and Australia (<---or so my friend tells me, who's there studying at the moment). I'm seriously not feeling the Russian fashion scene. Not to say that all women here look like this (about 5% look very nice), but it's all very........hookerish. Altogether, it's just too much; the 5-inch heels, fishnets, miniskirts, LOTS of makeup, and so much bling-bling at once it would make Mary J. Blige blush. And oh god, let's not forget the mullets! I swear on everything I own that, seriously, about 3 in every 5 guys has a mullet or braided "rat-tail." Mullets are very, very in right now (men and women alike), and I'm tired of getting slapped in the face by the tails of them every time I walk outside. Sorry if this post has included anyone here's particular fashion sense, but speaking personally, these are just not things that I admire.

Give them a break they have been capitalists for under 20 years you need a couple hundred years to develope your own style and taste.......then again where did the mullet come from.....

Yeahhh, I saw a show on American dudes finding Russian brides, and in fact, Triassic and i know a dude that went over part of a group to check out the 'fertile grounds', and it's big business. The show profiled three relationships, all very pretty Russian girls meeting older wealthy guys. These girls didn't just jump on first guy, but they were desperate to flee the stale Russian economy and lack of opportunities. My friend from Philippines told me it's same way over there with girls constantly in web cafes trying to meet Mr. Right American or Brit. Two of the Russian girls made out good, meeting a very nice guy that gave them a beautiful life. The other just used the guy, having him pay for a Flat in Moscow. He was kinda creepy dude!!
