I don't know how many of you watched the Olympics, I did and they're were friking AWESOME!!! now I'm having the most impure thoughts about Michael Phelps!! ...I know, I know that hes not that physically hot, but that body and the way he swim!!! mmmmm!!!...... Anyway, I'm writing because I don't know how many of you watched the closing ceremony last nite.... I did, and the part that London is doing the show I noticed this girl and a guy in wheelchairs dancing..I thought It was pretty cool until what I saw?? .. all the sudden the girl in the wheelchair stands up and start doing all kind of crazy pirruettes..then I went WTF!! I just thought that it look weird, did they wanted to portrait the disabled people as part of the show or not???....... I found it interesting and the only place that I can comment about that is here.... did someone also saw it??

I thought I was seeing things and suddenly the gals wheelchair was EMPTY. I thought maybe she was being held up on someone's shoulders for a dance move and then THERE SHE WAS, just dancing along with the rest of the able-bodied group. I even said something to my daughter, whose apt reply, at age 6 was... "I guess she's fake disabled". I guess. If they were trying to make their "equal opportunity" point, they missed it by a mile.

I also saw that and I too had the same 'WTF!?!?', then resigned myself to realise 'It's China'...they have to take some baby steps over there still towards true acceptance.

I guess both China and Europe have still so many issues with this subject as people were commenting on Chan's post the other day..... I'm glad I'm not the only one that went WTF with this!! It def. looked weird.....I was trying to find that part on Youtube but couldnt, maybe when more people post videos will be there for the ones that missed it in here.......

Yep, it was at the point where the girl actually walked/danced back to her chair that my partner pointed at the telly and screamed "FAKE CRIP! FAKE CRIP!" - it was hilarious

While it was integrated into the 'London Segment' of the Closing Ceremony, the oversight of the entire ceremony (which included the 'passing of the torch' so to speak) was all Chinese; as far as I know it was directed by the Chinese, and when the Paralympic brochure was referring to people and athletes with disabilities as 'useless', I would guess that the attitude prevailed in directing the Closing Ceremony.

WOW, they referred to us as 'useless' I'm amazed, really. I loved the Olympics, watched most of it, but as AB said, if they were trying to be politically correct, they missed it by a mile. But here's my question, do most ABs care at all about the 'fake' portrayal??? Have you heard any news about this? Probably not!

Most people, I would presume, completely missed it/overlooked it, as it is an issue that most people would be oblivious to. The 'dazzle' of the ceremony would've kept most people distracted without a keen eye for consistency.

Reminds me of the old 'cowboy vs indian' movies, where all the Native Americans were white guys with blue eyes, terrible wigs and brown skin makeup. I always loved that, so laughable!! I remember "Dances With Wolves" using real live Natives and language...one of the first maybe??? It's still ok to use 'fake' disabled for movies, why?

Lack of a talent pool, lack of big name gimp actors to draw big crowds...

Plus, there's inevitably a "walks again" scene or a "pre-accident" scene requiring an AB actor.

I also watched the closing ceremony, and i saw a guy or girl in wheelchair. It doesnt bother me if they are able bodied.I think that we have to see or think what idea have the art director of those cerremony. It think that it was great.I think that this cind of things can only contribute to our comunity.

I'm not into 'fictional' things much anyway, so why not use an AB dude as Crip? Or, a better male actor to play a woman - remember Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie? This link is exactly what I was thinking about for a while - a REAL documentary that portrays Chair Life for what it is!! I imagine ths does nothing for devness, but maybe I'm wrong. I'd like to hear Dev-comments!! www.thirteen.org/rolling/experience/thefilm

I totally agree why they have to hire a disabled wannabe to fill the position. It is kind of offensive to me almost like the lipsinging the chinese setup.

I heard a news report that the Australian symphony playing at the 2004 Olympics opening ceremonies were NOT actually playing. They were faking it as a recording of another orchestra's recording played. It's starting to get kinda funny to me...maybe one day we'll elect a President that really is not the guy/gal we see. lol Kinda like Bush is REALLY Cheney behind the curtains!!! lol
