I must point out that USF is where I graduated from with a B.A. in Mass Communications. GO BULLS! : ) however, the device looks kinda dumb to me, and of course the media has to turn it into a 'disabled man feels like he can do ANYTHING now" story. Doesn't it kinda get fucking boring to hear the same story every time it involves a dude in chair???

Doesn't it kinda get f*cking boring to hear the same story every time it involves a dude in chair??? LMAO Tony, you read my mind, Dude. ;D The poor guy can't wear any shoes, has a trache, and he's thinking about being the next Davy Crockett? OK, I'm glad he feels he can do more, which helps him feel better about himself. That's all cool. But let's be honest, that invention is not going offroading with the 4wheeler guys unless they're going up and down his driveway. First, couldn't they make it a little bit BIGGER? I hope his "trails" are paved 2 lane highways because that tank's not going anywhere near any woods that I know. Second, how do you transport it anywhere? Rent a flatbed truck? Third, where would you store it? Fourth, did I mention how insanely BIG it is? ;D Fifth, the battery & motor life must be terrible hauling a few hundred extra pounds around on rough terrain... even if they use underdrive gears on it (invention) for low end torque. I'm sure Quickie or Jazzy will warrantee those repairs when he starts smoking the motors, lol. Sixth, I hate to say it, but that thing's got a serious Dork Factor look to it, lol. That's my opinion, obviously, but it looks like it belongs in a Spiderman movie.

Yeah, you can always tell the difference between the chairs invented BY wheelchair users and ones invented FOR them. As one of the commentators on the site points out, it looks like the gyroscope/assfuck machine Mr Garrison invents on South Park.
And the smarmy delivery by the newscaster kills me--why must they do that every time? "And now here's a device that will make life (pause for dramatic effect) a little easier for one very (longer pause) special young man."
::vomits::

Even if it's a shit product (which it is) it gets other people thinking about new ideas. Basically, I just wanna see some new toys and a renewed interest in disabilty innovations I'm still waiting for the hoverboard Michael J. Fox promised back in 1985

Fox promised back in 1985 ...I just want the DeLorean to Time Machine conversion kit...really is it that much to ask for...? ...and yes, that thing looks riddiculous, but it's a bunch of college students and their engineering product...that college students and engineering usually leads to a Ph.D in Bong Design...so that there are some people legitimately interested in this, is a good thing, like sova says...they can refine their designs later.

Don't get me wrong, I have major respect for anyone who designs and builds anything but that reporter made me mad.

Agreed on all points. Newscaster = fail
For real, though, I'm waiting on a car I can lock my chair into that uses my joystick for either turning/throttle.
C'mon, folks... hop to it.

Actually, what the fuck am I thinking? This freedom machine could be equipped with a lawn mower blade. Now, that quad dude can start his own landscaping biz - Quad Cuts!!! Hey, I'll hire him...I need a dude for the Summer!! Seriously here, do they teach the 'disabled story technique' in journalism college? I'm curious coz it's always the same, exactly the way Devogirl pointed out, complete with the 'pause' and overly-inspired grin.

One of the commenters actually said this could expand his employment opportunities... that he could cut lawns. I almost died.

The cost of it is laughable. There are so many other more useful things you could spend $7500 on & its always the same with new mobility ideas.

There's already a few offroad powerchairs on the market that are 4WD or track driven, that aren't the size of a compact car. They are design engineered specifically for the application.
Thanks Devogirl - Now I have that Dirty Laundry song by Don Henley in my head, lol.

I think it's funny that when they introduce the wheeler, the subtitle under his name says "quadriplegic."

First, this thread has given me some good chuckles...thanks to those with that gift of written sarcasm! 2nd, Phil's right, there's chairs out there built for off-roading, DUHHHH. They reinvented the wheel. 3rd, Creative E...I looked at the comments, and you're dead-right...the dude said this could open up job opportunities. See, I wasn't far off...pretty soon there will be quad lawn care services everywhere. Hell, you could mow your own lawn now. lol
The other thing about the way the media reported this is shit is the quad says this gives him 'hope'. WTF??? Let's see, a little off-roading is all you need? Hell, I need me one of them thar mochines.
Ok, kidding aside, someone mentioned it before, but it would be very cool if they built a car you can pull your chair into...legally, safely drive on-road using your joystick. Now that's something to give 'hope.'
Phil, send those dingbats a link to those offroad chairs you're talking about!!
