That was some layover! Seven months in the airport! Quantas should be ashamed! So, our Alex is finally boarding the plane? This is very exciting, though I can't help but wonder how long his flight is going to take? Lol.

They check people´s feet? I thought they checked people´s shoes ... ;D. Well, I remember Alex having a bath before going to the airport - on the other hand, he stayed there for several months, so I´m not sure, his feet are clean any more ... . And if I were Alex, I would really have to pee by now ;D.

Iish (And yes they will check your feet. security isn't really sure what to do sometimes with paralysed feet... I've actually never had anyone fool around with my feet with security before - they'll have you take off the shoes - but usually in my experience, they leave the feet alone...they sometimes bring a mirror to look under the footplate and such, though, in case you're gonna' pull an Osama bin Wheeler or something like that. (Glad to see you're back to writing again.)

I could write about Alex peeing but I think that is superfluous to the story...unless you have a pee fetish (And yes they will check your feet. security isn't really sure what to do sometimes with paralysed feet....anyway moving along.... that he could guess what was going to happen next. The guy who had done the drug swab came back and gave Alex the all clear. he put his shoes back on .... LMAO! I don´t have a peeing fetish! I was just putting myself in Alex´s shoes - the ones he took off, that is - in any case, they´re the wrong size, type and colour, so I´ll take them off again and leave Alex to it.

What is this world coming when we have weigh up whether to use word waitress ? Seriously, I'd like to think that I am an enlightened female, but I hate the use of words like actor to define the whole acting profession - what is wrong with the words actor and actress? As if the use of the word actor will disguise that someone is female . Also, whoever coined the word chairperson should be shot. There will always be waitresses, so who cares? This crazy PC business is just plain ridiculous. And if anyone wants to jump on me for saying so... then so be it. It should all just be common sense. Keep the story going Bbuf and chuck in as many waitresses and stewardesses as you need.

It's no longer ok to use the words 'mentally retarted' either. (aka the R word) There is a huge campaign going on in the US about not using the 'R' word. It appears it is going to replaced with 'Intellectually Disabled'. You may use the word retarded until March 3, 2010. After that...... well. www.specialolympics.org/spread-the-word-to-end-the-word.aspxNow what shall we call the mentally ill? I suppose "Emotionally Disabled" or would it be "Chemically Disabled"? Maybe "Synaptically Deficient" or "Psychiatrically Involved"? Bbuf, keep throwing in the waitresses, bar maids and actors all you want. It's ok with me.

How many kinds are there? 1)Spastic 2)Athetoid 3)Ataxic 4)Mixed It is also subclassified by areas involved quadriplegia, diplegia, triplegia, and monoplegia, hemiplegia (I am happy to know that all my studying for my PT boards a couple of years ago was not in vain haha.) Fair enough. I'm totally lacking on crip awareness. I was once totally stumped by the question, "What kind of CP do you have?" Umm so i'm confused ru saying that quadriplegia is just another term for Cereal Palsy?

quadriplegia in this case is just refering to the number of limbs (4 in this case) that are without movement "plegia" simply means paralysis or cessation of motion. It can be used not only in spinal injury, but in CP, CVA, and other disorders as well .

Now what shall we call the mentally ill? I suppose "Emotionally Disabled" or would it be "Chemically Disabled"? Maybe "Synaptically Deficient" or "Psychiatrically Involved"? Haha, all of the above? Mentally ill is fine with me. Or whatever works for you. I do, however, really HATE the term wannabe, just because it totally gives the wrong idea of what is actually going on. I suppose a lot of people who are into PC language think the same thing...the issue isn't the actual word, but whatever negative connotations the word is giving, or whatever stereotype they believe that language is perpetuating. They come up with a new term that more accurately describes the condition. I am not into PC for PC's sake, but I do believe in the power of language.

My vote for Synaptically Deficient - try saying that all the time without going nuts!

I think I would just say "people with psychiatric diseases". (Claire, what is "PC" in this case?)

I have no idea!! I had to do some research on this one. A militant disability activist friend of mine has just informed me that it is "emotional disability" but personally, I'm not entirely sure that covers all the bases of all the different things that I would consider to fall under the heading of "mentally ill". Like I don't think "emotional disability" accurately describes BIID, for example, to which he responded that perhaps "psychiatric disorder" was better, then. I think, probably, "mentally ill" is just fine, as I think the anonymous person who wrote the wikipedia entry actually did a good job of defining it: "A mental disorder or mental illness is a psychological or behavioral pattern that occurs in an individual and is thought to cause distress or disability that is not expected as part of normal development or culture." Perhaps "disorder" does sound better than "ill". In short, I still don't know, but I tried.
