Some people asked me, so here's the procedure for everyone to see:
1) First, find the pic you want and get its "URL". Thats the address in your browser, beginning with "http://". You need the address of the picture itself, not the website its on. If the address ends in ".html" its not the right address. If it ends in ".jpg" or ".gif" its right.
To get the address of a picture, go to the webpage with the pic on it, right click on the picture and select "properties" from the pop up menu. The box that appears will have the address of the pic and you can copy & paste from it.
Bear in mind that it's considered rude to directly link to a pic on a site if you don't have permission from the owner since it uses up his bandwidth. Thats why my link to Lee's heart makes me a dirty bandwidth thief
If its a small picture though, and the site is big, no one will notice probably. Some sites let you put up pictures for hosting, too, if you want to be legit.

3) From there go to "modify profile"
4) Find the entry labelled "avatar URL" and enter the URL of your pic in that space.
5) If your picture is too big you probably should specify the width and height in the spaces below the URL, which makes the picture scale down to those dimensions. Something like 100 by 100 is about right. If your pic isnt a square, scale both width and height by the same factor or the pic will be distorted.
