I've been wondering (and forgive me if you've already had this discussion, but i'm new here) but do you look at certain programs and movies that come out and wonder if certain writers and directors have dev tendancies?
For example, James Cameron - whether you like Avatar or not, its at least his second project with a strong paraplegic character - Dark Angel being the other.
And Seth MacFarlane, of Family Guy and American Dad fame. I mean, there are way too many para/quad storylines in those shows to be a coincidence - dont you think?

Welcome and thanks for that great post. You pose a really interesting question and I wonder about James Cameron's interest in the topic also. As far as Family Guy goes, I think that Seth gives fair play to anyone and everyone who belongs on the "we must be politically correct" list, which includes the disabled, homosexuals, blacks, Indians.... or any other situation or topic that could be construed as 'taboo stuff that's good for a shock laugh'. South Park operates in the same way. James Cameron, on the other hand is a much more interesting case. Is he straight or gay? I am too lazy to look up his bio.

Cameron has really good taste, the amazingly hot women and those paras ... he definitely seems to be trying to drive us crazy. I'm just not so sure why. Let's face it, which kind of dev would make Logan stand up so often?? I know I wouldn't have There are lots of things in his handling of the issues that don't add up. But I forgive him for the eyecandy. Fanfic can solve the rest.

Dark Angel drives me crazy. I wonder if it is a creative thing too. So many issues to explore for the writer and avenues to go down. The struggle to come to terms with it, finding love, pushing boundaries. One of my fav Dark Angel episodes is where Logan and Max go to a small town and he has to protect Max and the kid. He really kicked ass. I think that it was also a turning point for the character to gain confidence.

I disagree. With comedies like Family Guy and South Park, disability is a taboo topic to poke fun at, it's a quick way to get a laugh and be "edgy." I think they do it really well, but it's all about getting a laugh, not a sexual attraction.
In action movies, it's a quick way to have a big contrast or conflict between strength and weakness. Crippled body vs. superhuman body = instant contrast, without bothering to show any interior psychology. It's all just right there on the surface. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed Avatar, Dark Angel and even Titanic. But James Cameron is a lazy lazy writer. Anyway lots of movies do this, it's hardly unique to him.
As for why he went to all the trouble to make Sam Worthington's legs look atrophied, I'm sure it was to prove his CGI skills and add to the overall hyper-realism. I doubt it was to get us all excited.
It's nice to think that there are people like us making the movies we love, but unfortunately it's probably wishful thinking. Besides, isn't JC straight? Wouldn't he be making movies with para girls if he were a dev?

New to this so don't now how to quote properly yet but I think that in the Dark Angel episode you are being a bit too skeptical. We had nothing but Logan's psychological adjustment, we barely saw him when he wasn't having some dig at his disability. But in this episode he actually realized that he was self imposing his boundaries.
I am half way through Avatar I think JC has to have some devo feelings, where sexual or not. The transfer scenes sent electricity through my nether regions and he doesn't back away from any scenes to confront the chair. The close up of the character's hand on the wheel and pushing rim. That was done so sexily and wasn't required for the plot or story. When Weaver pulls his chair back when he is trying to get away from logging his diary entry. That, for me, was a rewind moment. A little snippet which was thrown in but very sexy.
Comparing him with Ironside, the only wheeler program I had growing up (that and Heidi and I would rather the cow herder guy was in the chair), there was no play with the chair at all. It was just a prop used like a lamp or something.
What about Coming Home with Jane Fonda. That is a pretty hot devo film. It deals with sex, transfers, she's married to an AB but has an affair with a wheeler.
And just another quick question. Years ago over the run up to Christmas there was a brilliant mini series where the girl was a ballerina and she had a car accident, met up with a paraplegic and it was about her struggle to get out a chair to dance again and her relationship with the paraplegic. That was an orgasmic program for me at the time. Do anyone know what the name of it was? It was German and dubbed into English I think.

Just adding to my last post as I have now seen all of Avatar and I have to agree that JC is no devo cause there is no way he'd of done that to gorgeous Sam Worthington!! Just imagine if there will be a sequal and no sexy guy in a wheelchair but a blue catman jumping around

So gutted they only have it in german really liked that show. Perhaps it'll be on again in the uk. I do seem to have this spooky thing where I'll think of a movie and it'll be on within the week and no I am not saying that I put a DVD on but it is on the tv listings. Will test this theory now and say paper moon and see. If that will be on. I will report back my findings.
