I saw The Ex yesterday. It got terrible reviews, but I was thinking: damn, Jason Bateman as a paraplegic can't be that bad.
Well, it was. In every way imaginable.
~Spoiler alert~
Bateman's character was such a one-dimensional dick, it was hard to have any feelings for him whatsoever. I ordinarily think Bateman is really hot, but he was not hot in this movie. He talked in this really affected voice and wore ridiculous outfits with sky blue vests and bowties.
And then, if all that wasn't bad enough, it turns out he's not even really disabled. He's somehow been faking it since age 14. What??? And then he decides to stop faking it for even more unclear reasons, then walks outside and gets hit by a bus. I thought he was going to be paralyzed from that accident in some twist of irony, but they never said what happened to him. So I guess he..... died?
Anyway, worst dev movie ever.

I know, add The Ex to the "should have been hot" list Jason Bateman is so cute too, what a shame. And yet, the same plot device in Something about Mary (the guy pretending to need crutches/braces to get the girl) was IMO hilariously funny. I liked the scene where he tries to pick up his keys from the floor, ha ha.

This is the first movie where I didn't think Jason Bateman was really hot. Kind of ironic.
I agree, Devogirl, that picking up the keys bit in Something About Mary was completely hilarious. I think the Farrelly bros are really good at handling humor about disability, which is something I've noticed in their other movies too. Actually, I can't think of a Farrelly bros movie that doesn't involve a disabled character.
In The Ex, it wasn't clear that he was pretending to be disabled to get the girl.... it was just kind of random. And he'd been doing it since age 14?? How did his parents allow this?
