I was thinking that it might be interesting to consider when you first heard that there were people specifically attracted to the disabled. If you're a dev, when did you first hear that there were others like you? If disabled, when did you learn that there was such a thing as devoteeism, even if it wasn't called that?

For myself, it was around 1978 when I was about 15. I read this novel, which I remember nothing about except for a line of dialogue from one character to another which went something like: 'You know, there are women who will only have cripples. They don't want any man but a cripple."...Then a few years later I came upon this adventure story about a lone explorer who comes across a lost tribe of Amazons who capture and cripple males to keep them from escaping, but also "because it is well known that a cripple best performs the act of love."(Woo, now THERE'S a fantasy; Love Slave To Amazons

It was probably 7-8 years ago on NewMobility, it was only male devos though. Since then everytime one came by, I would ask, "where are all the hot female devos"??!?!?!?! People would say they exist but there only seemed indirect evidence.

Only since the advent of good internet access for me, probably about 4 or 5 years ago. I knew there were male devs back in the days when the National Enquirer ran personal ads for "man looking for nice female amputee", etc. I didn't know what they were called though.
I had never spoken to another female dev. (that I knew of) until just a few months ago, from this board.

Fall of 1994, one evening. Living in a 1 bedroom studio, in a hick town 100Km away from Toronto. Hadn't been on the internet much more than 1 month, I came accross someone who was also transabled.
Discovering i wasn't alone took a huge weight off my shoulders. We must have "talked" for ten hours straight that night.

I had no idea what a devo was until around 1997 or 8 when there was a really big deal made about it on the New Mobility board. After reading up on what was meant by it I never gave it much thought. Then recently there was a post on the fore mentioned board bringing my attention to this site and I thought it would be nice to meet some females that weren't afraid of the chair or the unknown that many have about a person with a dis. So far you all seem like very nice a lovely ladies which I hope to get to learn more about and from. Faron

Whoa, Triassic, what was the title of that book?!
For me, I spent most of my life thinking I was the only one. Around 1999 I was living in Seattle and an avid fan of Dan Savage. Some guy wrote in to his sex advice column talking about how he was attracted to amputee women. Dan's answer was kind of vague, but I think he mentioned something about devotees and the magazine Overground. That was all I needed, I went online and the rest, I guess, is history. Like Sean, I too felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. The first really active group I joined was paraquad. It was mainly devo men, and some were real assholes, but I met a boyfriend there, and I met Lee, so hey, it wasn't all bad.

I think Dan Savage is awesome, even though I don't always agree with him... I'm impressed that he was the one who introduced you to the whole thing. I have paracathy to thank for figuring out what a devo is.

It was about 7... almost 8 years ago for me. I was surfing the net looking for... well you know the stuff we look for. First I stumbled across the casters (folks who dig arm, leg, and body casts). Since some of them are devs too I eventually found my way to Yahoo groups. From the Yahoo groups I made my way here. :-)
