There seems to be some interest in starting a devo book club. I know we've already been talking about (W)hole but I still think that would be a good choice for the first book. Selfishly, since I still haven't read it yet, and probably can't get to it for another 2 weeks, I'd like to set the date a little ahead. That will give others time to read it too. I'd like to set a specific date to open a thread on the book, that way we can talk about it in detail without worrying about spoilers. We can also set up a voice chat if you want, I haven't done that yet but I would for this. Again planning a specific date and time a few weeks from now would make it easier for more people to participate.
And if anyone has more suggestions for other books, fire away.

that sounds like a great idea. my copy of (w)hole has been ordered and is currently on it's way to me.
personally, i'd prefer to have the discussion on the board vs. chat. if it's on the message board we all have equal opportunity to participate, and with timing that works for each of us, wherever we are and whatever schedule we keep. maybe we could then organize a voice chat about it at the end to tie it all up?
as someone who doesn't keep a regular schedule and who isn't home a lot, the chances are pretty slim of my being able to attend a scheduled chat. but i would really like to be able to participate fully nonetheless.

I'm in and will probably read it again by then I'm a fan of the voice but think both methods (on the board and voice chat) would be good to discuss it. Dolly don't you think you could plan to be home when we schedule the chat? It's really amazing talking in real time and real voice with other dev women. Its scary yes, but makes it real in a very cool way. Kinda like your friends being devs. I'm not the best at being around for chat but if its scheduled I can make it happen.

The copy I ordered shipped yesterday so I'm anxious to get it and start reading! The book club sounds like a fantastic idea! I haven't been on voice chat yet mostly due to computer issues, but hopefully will be able to soon.

I've read w(hole) but wouldn't mind looking over again and discussing it.

Wouldn´t it be the best idea to discuss the book in a thread? That way the discussion will remain here for others to read later on . Also, if there are ten people or more in a chat room it can be difficult to manage the chat and it risks being a cacophony. I would prefer the thread if it were me.

I think a book club is an excellent idea. I would be up for anything, discussions in the forum or voice chats. I too would set my alarm and get up in the middle of the night, if need be! However, I don’t know how the voice chats could work with more than a few people. Are their turns for speaking? Certainly everyone can not just try to yell over each other at the same time!
Also, as their aren’t that many devotee-themed books out there, maybe other types of books could be interspersed to fill in? Or would that defeat the purpose of a “devotee book club'? I'm just thinking out loud and saying that the idea has my vote!

Ok, I think the best thing is to open up a discussion thread on one day, then have a voice chat a day or two after that. Some people prefer to write and some prefer to talk. Participation is open, you don't have to write something first to chat.
It's nice that you all are willing to get up in the middle of the night, but I'm way too old for that. Maybe we should schedule two chats at different times to accommodate various time zones.
How about if we open the thread on Monday, Dec. 13, then have one chat on Tuesday Dec. 14 at 8 PM EST (1 AM GMT), then another on Wednesday Dec. 15 at 7 AM EST (12 PM GMT)? I admit I'm biased because I'm in the US Eastern time zone. If you'd prefer a different time, suggest something else.
There seems to be a problem with the calendar where entries can't be deleted once they're entered, so I'll wait until we have a consensus here before posting it to the calendar.
Also, when I said devo book club, I meant a book club for devos. I think there may not be any other devo-themed books but there are a lot of disability themed books we could read and discuss, both fiction and non fiction: autobiography, romance, mysteries, classics, anything at all.

Are we gonna let the guys do this too? Just curious... Now why would we do that...? (Besides I doubt that guys are really interested in a Book Club)

DG those times sound good for me if your looking for some yay or nay votes. I have noticed thought that Friday and Sat nights are best for chat since people who are up late for them typically don't have to work the next day. How about Fri the 17th and sat the 18th, same times. Just hoping to get everyone involved who can and wants to particpate.
