Hiya! I just moved to Virginia and I'm trying to create a new life that includes my dev side.... so I'm back after a bit of a break and would love to make a few new friends! I'm working on my Ph.D in biomedical engineering (which, unfortunately, mostly involves accidentally killing rats right now), I recently bought a wild child of a horse, and yes, I still have my Z28. Although it's getting pretty senile and crotchety. Up for a chat about anything, I'm going nuts trying to carry on a conversation with my ferret.

Ferrets, cars, killing rats and a dev? Wow, you sound a lot like me. I used to have 4 ferrets back in another, non-dev life, know more about cars than most women and unfortunately killed a rat in a college lab course and worked in a lab that killed thousands, monkeys too Its good to see you active again z28.

Hey guys! Yay people to talk to! I still haven't found anyone here (in Virginia) that I'd feel remotely comfortable talking dev stuff with and I could feel my inner dev slowly smothering. Big life changes aren't always fun right away. Anyways... @ super...<not even gonna try the rest of your s/n> I'm pretty sure we talked when I was active a while back. wheelieInCali That study sounds SUPER cool! I've actually done a fair bit of research in that area (though my info is a few years old now). I know they were able to use implanted subcutaneous electrodes to enable quads and paras to stand/transfer/walk with support about ten years ago, so I can imagine today's tech would far surpass that. Please keep us up to date - that's some cutting edge stuff and I'd be really interested to see how it's going! @ Emma - Wow that's almost weird enough to be creepy. Dev, ferrets and cars? The animal work in the lab is pretty rough - I used to have pet rats and it's hard to take that step back and remind myself that all those little ratties will be saving people. My ferret is my four legged comedian! What awesome animals. So, from one female gearhead to another, what's the reaction you usually get from guys? I've found that they usually think it's cool at first, but if you're into muscle and they prefer ricers (god forbid!) or something like that, things get ugly.

Yeah I'm not that much into cars to get reactions from guys, well other than the ones at midas telling about maybe needing a fuel filter. I do know what all the parts are under my hood, can change oil if I had to and can walk around a car parts store w/o needing help from the very eager male staff. I was sad to get rid of my "ricer" WRX for my Prius but needed to let my green, gas saving side take over the fun, turbo, 225hp side. I miss my ferreties.

I fell into the gas saving trap too... My z is semi-retired, and my daily driver is a hyundai accent. <sigh> I hate merging now. Ugg I hate dealing with mechanics - the stuff they try to get away with, just because I'm a chick.
@ Inigo It's all about the love, not the car!

Send me a PM, I'm in Maryland and I travel to northern Virginia a lot to hang out with friends! My dad is a molecular biologist, so science is very interesting to me, though I went in the humanities direction myself.

Nick, your avatar is priceless. Feel free to join in the car talk - not only are there no devs around me, there aren't any car people either! <sigh>

I was hoping car talk would get started somewhere on here coz I'm loving the new hot muscle-Camaro....Dodge Challenger and Charger are hot, too. ThankGod we saved the drowning car manufacturers!
Welcome back, Z28....I remember you rode ponies, or horses!! ; )

Hey Tony! The new muscle cars do look pretty sick. I've driven one of the new Camaros though and it's just strange... feels like a caddy inside or something. Part of the muscle car allure, for me anyways, was that they were always a little rough around the edges. You know, a car you could beat up a little on back roads. The new ones definitely lost that feeling (especially if you forget to turn off the traction control). They do haul some serious ass though. I sure do ride ponies!

the only ponies I like are the ones under hoods (horse power) My uncle used to race a Chevy Nova back in my high school days before the Marine Corps. I've helped rebuild quite a few of those old Chevy big blocks. I was his one man pit crew a few times when he raced dirt tracks and the rules were a little more lax. Good times.
After I got out of the military I had a Ford Ranger that blew it's engine in Phoenix. I had help getting the motor out of the truck, onto an engine stand, then back in but did all the engine work, aside from machine shop work, myself. I replaced all the fuel injectors and marked all the wires. I was a little nervous doing a fuel injected engine for the first time alone but I learned a lot more about mechanics working on helicopters in the Marines. When I finally got that truck put back together it started right up and ran like a dream until I sold it six months after my accident. It was awesome, I put it in the online Auto Trader and some kid brought over exactly what I asked in cash from his waiter job. I was counting benjamins, twenties, and ones. Everything seemed to work out great for me after injury, really made me believe in God again.
I still love mechanics and have done some work on my sister's '69 Chevy Malibu from a wheelchair. That big hood with an old school engine was very accessible and easy to work on. I remember laying on my stomach inside the hood and on a fold-up mattress underneath the car with my wheelchair sitting next to the fender for hours. Mechanic work is very therapeutic, makes you learn patience and builds character IMHO.
