Wow damn I wish I had the guts to just dive into something like that. I've done little jobs, but I'd be terrified of messing something up. Especially with all the electronic crap!!! My family used to have '66 stang and it was soooo much easier to mess with!
Working on cars will teach you patience AND the most inventive insults in the world. Anyone ever change spark plugs on an LT1?

I never worked on that engine but I read a little about it on wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_LT_engineDamn, it looks tight in there. That's where you girls are lucky to have small hands . There's nothing hotter than a cute girl with grease marks all over her face and an alternator with wires hanging in hand. I was afraid my trucking days were over when I blew that Ranger engine. I wasn't confident that I could rebuild it but there was a garage in the house where I lived and I didn't have much of a choice . I learned a lot there. I think as long as you have a couple Haynes manuals for the car and the engine though, you'll be ok. You just have to be organized about removing components and storing them until you are ready to put them back in. I had my motorcycle then so I wasn't without transportation. Plus, I lived close to an Autozone. Did you know how many tools they rent? I had a roll-a-way Craftsman box with tons of tools and went back and forth between Autozone for all the specialty stuff. They also do testing on all major components. Recently however, there was a California law prohibiting them from renting out the engine error code readers so you have to take it to a shop. What a raw deal that is! The newer cars have so many sensors, you'll never get a check engine light to go off without that code reader. Don't even get me started on California and shady smog shops.

Oh man, how I'd love to get behind the wheel of those new Dodge Challengers, or the new Camaro. This is pic of my first car - AMX! It was 4-speed stick-shift, which I loved driving...nothing like feeling part of the experience like shifting. I did work on my own car, but wasn't sophisticated enough to rebuild an engine. In fact, I sold my sweetass AMX after tearing it down to fix a clutch, and couldn't get it back together. lol I was young...

I'm sure at least some of you knew this, but they do have hand control manual transmission systems. It is kind of hard to find anyone who installs this in the U.S. but I know there is one in the San Diego area (or at least southern Cal area) that does this.

Yup that's my yummy engine... I'm pretty sure GM designed the engine compartment thinking these cars wouldn't last long enough for anyone to have to do multiple major repairs, because holy crap is it hard to get to anything! Spark plugs, wires, distributor, air filter.... PITA. My problem isn't the tools so much as finding a lift. Using jacks just makes me nervous and almost everything has to be attacked from underneath. I know they made special "California version" camaros (read: anemic because of the crazy emissions standards) for a few years - are they still doing that?? That really sucks. I'm keeping my cars registered in FL for as long as possible, since I don't have to get them inspected. Lol Tony, did you just sell it in pieces??? I actually know someone who went through the same thing with a tranny "rebuild". Looks like it was a fun car! There's also the possibility of paddle shifting, which is available on some higher end sports cars already. Most of those systems don't have a clutch, so it depends how "manual" you really want the car to be.

lol...Yeah, I did sell it with parts scattered!!! The dude I sold it to put it together in few hours and drove my baby away, but I was tired of hitchhiking to work. It was late-70s when you could actually get a ride. lol
As for driving those hot machines, it's over for me....i couldn't transfer into a car, hands aren't good enough to grab stick (no grip), etc. I do love my van...easy to work on when I need repair, cheap parts, and I love driving it, although no fast driving anymore. ; )

When I crashed my crotch rocket, I was in the middle of rebuilding my 1996 YZ 250 God I miss that bike. It was in pieces and I got a thousand bucks for it! I made out. It was actually a good deal for the guy too though because it was a good bike and the year before they started making you smog two-strokes for off road use. Freaking California!

Tony, that's priceless. And when it comes down to it, a car is a car - best form of freedom!
A 250? Lol I don't think I could even get my leg over one of those. They make you smog offroad stuff?? That's just criminal. And why I love FL.... I don't thing my maro would pass even VA's very lax inspection - CA cops would have a heart attack!

Ferrets, cars, killing rats and a dev? Wow, you sound a lot like me. I used to have 4 ferrets back in another, non-dev life, know more about cars than most women and unfortunately killed a rat in a college lab course and worked in a lab that killed thousands, monkeys too Its good to see you active again z28. about the monkeys. Welcome back, Z28gal and all the best of luck with your ph.d. thesis. Also, we have chats quite often (Skype, Yahoo) and I´m sure you´re welcome to participate .

Thanks for the re-welcomes! My threads always seem to evolve (or devolve?) into car stuff... perhaps I should change my s/n! Lol.... Team America! It's sad that I've seen all the college classics and not the actual classics. Braveheart? Never. Superbad? 8 times.
