P.S. I was talking to someone the other night, and they said they found a research article about devs that concluded that about 1% of the population have some form of devoteeism. The article also said that their explanation for the "creation" of devs was a deep-seated fear of the opposite sex, most likely developed in childhood. The disabled population is seen as less threatening, and voila! Devotee. Not sure what to think about that....

I hate to give in to the idea that a disabled man is less threatening, but I wouldn't be surprised if it came out that way in my baby brain. I have struggled with fear of men. My fears were not helped by growing up in a community that really put men on pedestals and taught me to worship them.

I don't think I have a fear of the opposite sex. I really don't. Sometimes I wonder about these studies! P.S. I am scared of men. They are big. And hairy. And smelly. Like monsters. ;D

Lol Inigo... ;D
I didn't ever worry about guys until I got older and realized how much stronger they can be, but my inner devotee was already alive and kicking (and throwing tantrums!) by that point.

I too don't think I was ever afraid of men. While I was growing up I never had any experiences to make me feel scared that I remember.I disagree with that assessment of the cause of devotee-ism. Are male devotees scared of women?

I think this is the lazy explanation, thought up by researchers who are not devs themselves. This theory also implies that there is something wrong with us that needs to be cured. By this logic, a successful relationship with an AB person would make the dev desires go away, and we know that's not the case.

Are male devotees scared of women? That's the first thing I thought of too! It does sound like an easy way out for the psychologists. Maybe it plays a role in forming some devotees, but that's certainly not the only possibility. I don't think there NEEDS to be an answer to the "why", I've never felt my devoteeism needed to be "fixed". I am curious though.

I don't think there is a why, I don't think we will ever know. And yet that's the number one question people ask me.

Me too Ruth, its the number one question I get after I explain my attraction.
I too would like to know why but doubt I will ever know. My theory is that there is nothing genetically wrong with most of the guys we are attracted to (ex: CP, amputee, para, quad) since these are all acquired disabilities. Nature created us devs to help carry on the genes of those guys.

That sounds pretty good. Except I have been attracted to people with genetic neurological disorders... :/

Yeah that's the hole in the theory. IDK how to explain it all.

i love myers-briggs. i think if we could all walk around with our 'type' pinned to our shirt we'd all be better able to relate to each other. i'm INFJ which apparently is the rarest combination. (1%-3%) so combine that with the dev thing (1% of the population?) and i am a rare breed! lmao i scored 100% on the intuitive preference. does that mean i get an A+? i don't feel any relationship to the autism spectrum-thing. i took the test and got 17 which is 'average' but even then the number was higher than i would've expected it to be.

I've always thought I was made a little different to be with a different man, but being immersed in the science community, the genetic aspect makes my "theory" seem more legit. Yes, you can call science legit. Dolly - That's it, I'm getting an INTJ forehead tattoo!!
