Just thought there should be a reminder that we have a date picked out already for April, which is April 19th (for those of you who are American history buffs, that is the date of the very first battle of the Revolutionary War, which is celebrated in my home State every year as Patriot's Day) We picked the book Moving Violations by John Hockenberry (I probably spelled that wrong). He is a journalist and war correspondent and a paraplegic. He wrote this memoir a while back and it is excellent. This was, I think, the first memoir of a disabled man I ever read. I learned a lot from it and I'll admit I was a little disappointed that he was married Even if you don't read the book, still hop on for the Skype chat. My experience is that they are always fun, inspiring, and energizing and talk quickly turns to all kinds of things other than the book.

Apparently April is excellent war weather. I'll try to be there, homework permitting...

YEAY!! Thank you so much Ruth for scheduling this. I'm really glad the book club has taken off! I read Moving Violations many years ago and really liked it. I will dig up my copy, and I plan to be on skype for the chat.
I'm really sorry I missed the last one, I kind of disappeared into a black hole of busyness and travel over the last few weeks. I'm also sorry I missed the PM from Persephone who has now deleted her account. But thanks for noticing that this will be my 1000th post and thanks for the kind words about my book/movie reviews. I've been behind on those too but I will get on it soon, promise!

"April is the cruelest month" Sad because it's also my birthday month! And many other people's birthday months as well!

Oh, I'm sad you're going to miss it, Inigo!
I just finished re reading it this weekend and I forgot how good it is! His writing is stunning, dense, beautiful and he puts things in ways that make me want to quote him and read it out loud to everyone around me!
I definitely want to buy my own copy.
Strangely I remember only one part of the book from when I read it back in 1995 when it came out. I remembered him burning his leg with the baking dish. That is the only thing i remembered from it!
Yet it also shaped so much of my thoughts and understanding of disability culture and disability rights.

Last time I opened the chat you all were not so satisfied. Apparently I have an old version of Skype, and my internet connection is not reliable. Also I thought I would have more time but a whole bunch of things have come up and much as I enjoy talking to you all, I can't stay online for a marathon session. Sorry! Maybe Emma could host the chat?
