I posted on fetlife a few weeks back about my difficulty finding female devotees. I have enough trouble talking to women etc, so why shouldn't I use my disabilities where I have an advantage. So I was referred here.
I see most here seem to be paralyzed or other forms of disability so I dunno how many amputees are actually on this board.
Anyhoo, a little about myself. On April 19th, 1990 I was severely burned in an explosion when I was 10 years old. I received 3rd degree burns to 98% of my body and amputations below knee and below elbow. I use a power chair for mobility and prosthetic hooks for my hands. I have been single for the past 16 years and I still very much would like to start a family, but first things first. Lol dont wanna scare anyone away..
I'm a very positive person despite all I've been through. I do believe I'm a stronger person because of it and I try to inspire others to enjoy life, appreciate what they have, and just keep the faith.
I hope to make friends on here and welcome any questions anyone may have..

Welcome to the board. Despite the name, we welcome guys with any kind of physical disability, and you are definitely not the only amputee here.

Hi crb! Is that lab in your picture a service dog? I was going to ask the same question, he or she looks like a service dog with the jacket service dogs usually are wearing. Such a cute dog . And is the guy your brother?

Yes that's my service dog from CCI. Canine companions for independence. A somewhat older picture though, it's from 2004. And yes that's my younger brother. He was burned also. I must add that my dog Jaycee passed away on April 9th.

I am sorry about the dog but hopefully you will get a new one one day . How does he help you in daily life?

For me my dog helped mostly with dropped items. But they can do many things. Open doors, turn lights off/on, pick things up, retrieve items, carry items, etc.

That´s amazing. How does one get a canine helper? Are they expensive? Do you regard him mostly as a service dog or is he a friend too? P.S.: I love dogs .

DD there area a couple of places across the country that train these does. I got mine from NEADS.org here in Massachusetts. The price I had to raise for my dog was $9500. Most of that comes from corporation and private donations. To get a dog you need to sign up with a group. They will meet with you and find out what your needs are and how active you are in your day to day life. Then with NEADS.org you go on a waiting list until they match you with a dog with a personality that will be compatible with you. With my new dog I was on the wait list for 10 months. It can be longer but people who had a service dog before typically get bumped up a little bit sooner then first timers. In my case we spend 24/7 together, she depends on me for her food, play time, keeping her fit and I depend on her for helping pick up things. Fetching the phone or a blanket while I am doing dialysis. There is also the emotional element. She is like a best friend. I find myself always talking to her, or we go out exploring new places (like the zoo, or going in to the city) So for me I would have to say my service dog is more of a friend then a service animal. A team mate is the best way to put it I guess. Thank you so much for explaining mrbb - give her a hug from me
