Hello everyone, I would just like to say I am sorry for delaying this introduction. I signed up a few weeks back and posted once and I am not sure if that went over well. Therefore, I never got around to introducing myself. However, I have to say, I have read many of the postings here and researched devotee on the net. I have found this site to be not only informative, but also open to both sides of the issue. I feel, covering the Devotee and devoted is the best way. As a result, after reading many of the postings, I am compelled to put my two cents in and I only hope I can help.
Who am I? Because of car accident in 1980, I am a 51-year-old male paraplegic. I live in the Northeast of the USA. My level of injury is T9/10 and my cord was severed. As you can see, by the date of my injury, you should understand there was no ADA or groupings of disabled people to share things or gain an understanding of what is to come. Therefore, I spent most of my life working and not being disabled. This approach I would not change if I had the chance, but I wonder now if it was for everyone else and not for me. Humm I will leave this for another time LOL.
What I do want you to know is my disability does not define me I define my disability. LOL

thanks everyone .. i hope I can contribute... Ray and Doe, Sorry if my post left you with any questions and I hope this will make you understand. I was very young when life changed. I just like many of my friends knew very little about disabilities. There was always a stigma associated. Some people believed that a person with a disability could not be independent or was needy. I think I too was raised with this perception. However, for me this was going to be my reality. But, this was going to be very hard. I can remember looking in all friends eyes and seeing the pain. After all, at this time and still today, I can see from both sides. One side of me wants to be just like everyone else, the other knows how different I am. So what did I do? I tried to mask all the things I was dealing with and put a positive spin on everything. I think I dealt with everyone’s feelings more than my own. Does this make sense? I do believe this was the right way for me. Because, when I find myself out and about. I make more friends that don’t see me as disabled, but as a Man in a chair…. LOL did this help
