hello all,
I suffer from severe depression. Helping people and offering support makes me feel better and makes me feel good about myself. I dated a quadriplegic so I know how much support is needed somedays. If anybody would like to talk, please feel free to send me a message.

That's very noble of you Lmartin, I hope all works out for you, but don't feel like you have to help someone to feel good about yourself. Sometimes it's okay to think about yourself first, and do what you've got to do to get yourself better. You'll find it'll be easier to help others once you've been helped yourself

I'm feeling awesome about myself now. I should have said I suffered from severe depression. I have my bad days once in awhile now but over all I got the help I needed. Helping people is what makes me happy so thats what I'm doing

What I find the most helpful is remembering that everyone has issues. EVERYONE. Once you internalize that, it's easier to be better to yourself as well as more compassionate to others.
Case in point: A guy I know ran a workshop at a conference, and afterwards a woman came up to him and started gushing about how great it had been. She said, "I just looked up and thought, 'Now THERE is a guy who has it together and knows what he's doing!'"
The guy told me later that it was hard not to laugh, because he'd spent the past week losing sleep and feeling like a failure -- specifically, that he'd never get his act together in time to do a decent presentation, and that he didn't know what he was doing.
Perception and assumption on our own parts stops us from doing so much, and from reaching out to people we assume couldn't need or want us.
