Hey guys, I am thinking about getting a Microsoft Surface tablet so I can take my writing anywhere and at the same time have all the tablet features. Does anyone have any feedback on those MS Surface tablets? I would welcome your advice! Thanks, Dani

I work with them every day. They're pretty cool devices. Are you looking to buy a Surface RT, or a Surface PRO?

The RT is the lower-spec of the two. It's a good device for browsing and reading and such. Battery life is not too bad, mayebe a bit shorter than I'd like.

I have both the RT and the Pro. They are my current second-favorite tablets (the iPad mini is just too convenient for magazine reading). They are kind of pricey, but with the Pro it's nice to have a full operating system instead of just a big phone. However, with the Pro you get a lot less battery life and more weight. My biggest problem with the RT is the lack of apps, and in particular, options for browsers besides IE.
For your purposes, the RT would probably be fine. Unlike the Pro, the RT includes Office apps for free--Word, Excel, OneNote, PP. And the real Outlook is coming soon too. If you have a Live account, everything gets synced and loaded up in the cloud, very convenient. The handwriting recognition in Onenote is probably the best of anything out there.
There are other manufacturers besides Microsoft who make both full Win8 tablets and RT tablets, if you want to shop around. You can also strike a middle ground and get a full Win8 tablet with an Atom processor, which will release you from the limitations of RT, but without taking as much of a hit on battery life. The sacrifice is processing speed.
One thing I love about the Microsoft ones is the kickstand. Soooooo convenient. I don't see why no one else thought of it first, and why no one else has copied it yet.

Surface RT is 5-7 hours, Pro is 3-5. Other manufacturers are Dell, Asus, Acer, and Lenovo (only Win8, no RT).
I would not get a Surface Pro or Lenovo right now, it is better to wait for them to update to the latest Intel "Haswell" chips, which substantially increase battery life.
