I've wondered about that. Most men know very clearly what they like and don't like sexually; to the point of not being open to new things, perhaps. But I get a sense that women may be...vaguer, about their desires. Like they haven't taken the time to reflect or investigate them much. Like that wouldnt be 'appropriate', or something.

Is there any way one of you could write a Logan Cale story and amp the dev stuff a bit...not too blatant, but just a degree or two MORE than is usual? Might be a good experiment to gauge the degree of devness in the world of fanfic; presumably if they liked it, they'd let you know or vice versa. I don't think so... take into account that there's already stuff like this out there written by "non-devos" (my ass!) Just to put an example... (Btw, that story totally follows the story line that cake described, too) The problem of trying to make it more obvious than that is that you'd have to make Max a devo (saying it out loud) and it's just too Out Of Character for her. Max has bigger problems, like the government chasing her or "not feeling human." I swear the latter is where all those "I'm NOT a devo" writers channel their guilt feelings... it really doesn't matter if she says "they made me, I'm not human", it easily reads as "I'm attracted to pain, I'm not human" and boils down to the "he deserves better" that most of us think at some point (which in DA comes from Logan too, and it's just all an angst fest that ends up with lots of fluffy love!) Most fanfiction is about fulfilling fantasies, and I think the one where the girl gets the wheeler without being a devo is a pretty common one. I'm not sure if that makes much sense... but I think we don't like the idea of being objectified that much, so we fantasize about getting who we want without objectifying them. Some of the stories on this site support that theory too.

Good explanation, Enid...
I geuss what I meant was going into the DESCRIPTIONS more deeply than would be considered usual; talking about atrophy or spasms, how it looks and especially how seeing it makes her *feel*. ...lots of detail about transfers...bulging shoulder muscles contrasted with 'lifeless' legs.
See, I don't know if this would work since I never read fanfic, never have seen DA, etc...but this has gotten me curious.

Oh for heaven's sake if you want to stir up a flame war on a fanfic site go do it yourself, it's not that hard. As Enid said most of those women are either not devos or very closeted about it, and they don't take kindly to envelope-pushing on these sensitive issues. Let 'em have their fluffy fantasies.

Oh yeah, and the thing about fantasizing of getting a wheeler without being a dev: i totally agree with amy and enid. i guess the idea seems just more romantic in a way... i can definitely say that all of my fantasies and stories are about non-devs who fall in love with the chair guy. actually i think i could hardly enjoy a Dark Angel version with a devo-max.

While Jessica Alba as a devo is certainly enough to pique my interest, I still don't want to have to read the whole thing. What page has the good stuff that would be of most interest to a guy? Please?

Most fanfiction is about fulfilling fantasies, and I think the one where the girl gets the wheeler without being a devo is a pretty common one. The only thing I have to add to this comes back to my abhorrence of the word 'devo' in any of its many variations. Classifying a person as a 'devo' strips her of her individuality and neatly packs her into a little box. In a way, it dismisses any real connection she might make with our hero, the wheeler, as a side effect of her kink. We all know ourselves, if no one else, and we know that we don't want people to see us as these one-dimensional slaves to our fantasies. So we don't see ourselves as such. And the heroines of our stories are thus not devos. Not necessarily because of any shame or being in the closet, but because somehow the romance is diminished by the categorisation.

But in the end, you're just a bunch of devos... with tits.
Objectify? Who? Me? No, never.

Hey "V", for the record, i'm with ya.....i really don't like the label "devo" for the reasons you listed, but i guess we all get some STAMP along the way. I really hate Gimp, or Crip, or handicapped, but i know i'm going to get a label of some kind, so i don't fight it. "Physically Challenged" was cool with me, but people don't hear it enough to remember it, i guess.
