I don't know if everyone is aware of this, but fan fiction is a great source of devotee literature. I find most of my disability related fiction there. Here are two links to a bunch of story archives to give you a little taste of fan fiction -if you haven't tried it yet. Let me know if you also know of some stories. I'm willing to share my links. I have hundreds of stories linked on my computer. Let me know what interests you and I will post some links. Consider me the fan fic library for those who are interested in this genre. www.geocities.com/disability_fanfic/welcome(has multiple fandoms) painless-j.livejournal.com/30074.html(harry potter fandom) I have many other lists (many different fandoms, many disabilities, even some with illness instead of a disability, if that is something you enjoy). Some are het, some are slash. Some have sexual stuff, some don't. Anyway, let me know what you think.

I am *all* for Harry Potter fanfiction, apparently... seeing as I spent all last night reading stories from your second link, there.
More please? ;D

The best place to go for fanfiction is fanfiction.net It has everything there, there are so many stories posted there you don't have a chance of getting through it all.

Depends on what you're looking for, I think. Sure, there are lots of stories, there are also lots of crap on there... and there's a limit on ratings, so you can't find any "adult fiction" on ff.n. Some of my favorite disability fics are hosted there, some are not. (And I've gotten through it all as far as I could get searching for disability fic too [even using google to search inside the fics because the summaries are often misleading]) For example, most self-respecting Harry Potter writers won't publish their fiction on there (specially slashers), but other fandoms don't exist outside FFN. Belle, I'd be interested in your links. I've probably read many of them, but I'd like to read the rest anyway ;-)

fanfiction.net is a really wonderful place for all who loved dark angel's logan cale. there are loads of stories about max and logan and some of them are really, really sexy (i consider them definitely to be written by devotees...). enid, what else have you found on fanfiction.net that is worth reading?

Oh yeah... Dark Angel fiction... I don't think I'd be here today without it. Most of my favorites belong to that section, too. Also, for higher rated stories Willow's and Rachel Wilder's Dark Angel stories are a must read if somebody has missed them (Btw, Rachel also has Joan of Arcadia stories and a X-files trilogy where Mulder is paralyzed). And yeah, I'd say some of them are devotees, whether they know about it or not. That's another fascinating topic altogether "Who writes disability fiction?", I swear I've seen writers who have a non-canon disabled character in all of their stories! Most of what I've read isn't outstanding enough to be recced (or even bookmarked), I'm afraid I wasn't kidding when I said there was a lot of crap (I've been spoiled by the amazing quality of some Harry Potter fiction, though). I read it all, mostly because the topic interests me even when it's treated badly (some sort of morbid curiosity on why would anybody write the stuff some people post, I think). Your best shot is usually following a good author's "favorite stories". On Kasman's I found both "Where angels fear to thread", a MS story that introduced me to slash (I still haven't gone back!) and Sammac's "Relative Motion" which did really surprise me, since it's a blindness fic and from a fandom I hadn't even heard of, but I couldn't tear my eyes from the screen. I don't know... I'm not a good reccer, because I like to know the reader's preferences beforehand. Something might be too fluffly, or too angsty, or too slashy... *shrugs*

Wow, who knew that fan fic was such a hotbed of devoteeism? But I'm pretty out of the loop--I know slash comes from Kirk/Spock so I always think slash means gay, but maybe I'm wrong. Enid, when you describe a story as "too slashy" what exactly do you mean?

Yes, slash is mainly used to mean male/male fiction (girl/girl can be called "slash" or "femmeslash/femslash/safic/etc."). I just said that because I know that some people don't like slash at all (But these days it's the only thing I read save for some DA fiction) Btw, the opposite would be "het" which in some places has become a "warning" (Look at painless_j lists... some fics have "het" before the pairings, but you won't see mentions of "slash" because she's a slasher and she has it as the "default") And fanfiction is definitely where a lot of female devotees run around. I suppose it's easier to go and find stories about Logan Cale than trying to venture into "fetish boards", which is what a place like this might seem like to a newbie. Finding devotees in fandoms where there's a canon disabled character is probably like shooting fish on a barrel, they just go there by themselves! Of course, this is all speculation based on what they write, I'm not really sure they really aware of what they're doing. (And I'm in fact a bit worried about links, 'cause I know "stats" could send some of them back here...)

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, I think you are right about female devos heading to fan fic sites rather than here. And why not--slash originally developed as a new way for women to express sexual desire that had previously been taboo. I'm glad to hear it's still fulfilling that function. And you're right too that not all the women who write fanfic or participate in fandoms even of things like Dark Angel or Blind Justice are devos. I once got flamed nearly to death on a DA fan site for mentioning devotees. Apparently being a fan of Logan Cale is ok, but of wheeler guys in general is not. Whatever.

I wouldn't even try mentioning it. Specially to the DA crowd (I've read BJ fiction, but I don't know those people at all) 'cause they're so vainilla it almost hurts! (It seriously seems like in that place "kinky" means "they have sex, period"... but also I'm aware the level of kinkiness of the HP fandom is hard to achieve ;D )

Enid, i totally agree on the "who writes disability fiction" thing. it's an interesting topic indeed. i have a feeling that many of the regularly-with-a-disabled-character- writers don't even know why they do it. they write stories and fill them with their favorite disabled character, but they're not really aware of the real reason. it kind of reminds me of how i thought about my fascination for paras before i definitely could identify it as a sexual attraction. it's easy to avoid this identification - just by telling yourself that the disability fascinates you in an abloutely medical way. sure, not every dark angel fiction writer is a Dev - but i still think you can immediately see if it's the case or not. i mean isn't it just way too obvious when in a twenty chapter dark angel fiction topic number one logan cale and and his disability is ? some writers just can't get enough of describing over and over again how he struggles, but how she loves him still, how he falls off his chair and doesn't want any help to get back in it. how they become intimate, but he's scared, and how she then assures him her unconditional love, how he comes to terms with the wheelchair and gets optimistic again and how they finally overcome the obstacle about the sex ...all these things. to read these fictions often makes me laugh, just like "oh my god, HOW many devotees actually are out there ?!". but yeah, the main part of the DA community would only get really annoyed or even pissed off if you talked about how sexy logan's disability is. they like him walking, just as he is in season two. and so you can also find a lot of fiction where the writer intentionally made him walk, even if the fic takes place in the first season. for many non-devs logan's wheelchair probably is nothing but a big disadvantage of the whole storyline and the max/logan pairing . *sigh* for us devs it's exactly the opposite

Is there any way one of you could write a Logan Cale story and amp the dev stuff a bit...not too blatant, but just a degree or two MORE than is usual? Might be a good experiment to gauge the degree of devness in the world of fanfic; presumably if they liked it, they'd let you know or vice versa.
The idea that one could be a dev and not really know it is pretty interesting.

The idea that one could be a dev and not really know it is pretty interesting. I find that very believable. A lot of women are not very in touch with their sexuality. I was certainly past puberty by the time I figured out that I was a dev.
