So, as I do not have a Kindle or other e-book-reader, Devogirl made me aware that there are free e-book-programs for computers or phones.
All of the computer-savvy people can probably tell me which ones are recommendable?

I use Amazon's Kindle software. For your PC, just go to the Amazon website and download for free. You can use it to read any .mobi file whether you purchase it from them or not. If you have a smartphone or tablet, there is also a Kindle app.

For .mobi files I also use Kindle for PC and for Android. To read .epub, on PC I use Adobe Digital Editions, on the phone mostly Aldiko, but there are several others. These two are the main formats nowadays, .mobi is the default format of Amazon, .epub of all the other devices. When I want to read older ebooks in older formats, or download something in a different format (ex. .fb2), I convert them with Calibre into .mobi (so I can read them on my Kindle, too).

It depends on your device... usually, making a search for "epub reader" wherever you get the apps for your phone, or googling "epub reader for [insert phone]" will give you plenty of options. Most readers will read a lot more files than just epubs, but it's the most common type. For Android I've tried Aldiko, CoolReader and FBreader. I have those three on my tablet, because it's a 10' and I needed ways of making the text take less space (some allow for two columns of text and stuff). On the phone I stick to FBreader, but mostly because it was the first one I got and I'm a creature of habit, lol. Although the fact that when I open it it goes straight to the text instead of showing me pictures of the books I've been reading might play a part too (it's mostly guilty pleasure reading... I don't want to see my library that often). On the computer, I have a Firefox add-on called EPUBreader. It might not be the best option, I don't think it saves where you left off (I don't read epubs on the laptop, it's mostly to check them before I transfer them to another device), although you can set bookmarks. I avoid Adobe because of the DRM shit it's involved with. Man, I clearly have a thing for opensource software, lol. Calibre is awesome for changing filetypes and fixing stuff. Now I have Sigil as well, which is an epub editor, sort of like a Word for epubs. That's what I've been using lately to copy stuff off the net in the way I like it, but there's coding involved.
