Go Down Swinging
Life has a way of wearing you down sometimes, especially as we grow older. When we’re young we’re strong, almost invincible. With age, the current we all swim against becomes stronger and stronger.
It’s the nature of living. I consider myself very blessed to have had the chance to live 34 years post the accident that, just as easily, could’ve killed me. Ironically, I’d say the greatest part of living has come after my being paralyzed, so much I’ve learned in life. But that’s not to say I wouldn’t go back to my able-body in a heartbeat. For sure, I still fantasize about it to this day.
However, it really takes adversity to find out what we are made out of, therefore, the struggle in life can be a blessing in itself. Or, at least, it’s an opportunity to win a fight, build pride in yourself. There’s that exhilaration we all feel when an obstacle is overcome. Self-esteem and strength follow. That’s how we grow in character and are able to face the world.
For a long time I wouldn’t write about myself. Maybe I was afraid of confronting myself, or maybe exposing too much. I’m not really sure, but at some point I decided to document my life through writings in order to teach because we are all teachers and students. We can learn from each other’s journeys. And I’ve sure had a journey worth noting.
You never want to go down without a fight. You owe it to yourself to go down swinging. Life can be beautiful, and it’s worth fighting for.
By telling my stories in this book, it’s another way for me to push back against the tide, make my mark in this life and pay it forward so that others may benefit from the 2nd life I was given so many years ago.
My message through this book is to “give the love that you want in this life,” which is a lyric from one of my songs. Don’t always be concerned with what you can collect and possess. Love is much more important in this life. First in order is to love yourself, and please let other’s love you.
Thank you for reading You Rock…I Roll, and I mean what it says. You do Rock, so get out there and prove it to the world.
That’s how you go down swinging!
