Hi and welcome, I am glad that you found us and are sharing your story.
I honestly only foresee one problem by your coming here and that is that people have already started calling you DD.
Because DD is actually me ;-)

DevvyD,
I have to admit that I'm torn here. I ABSOLUTELY get the transgender parallel, but I don't really understand why someone would WANT to be disabled. I'm going to attempt to say this in the nicest way possible: Do you REALLY know how tough this stuff is?

From what I know about other psychiatric conditions reason doesn`t help against a brain going haywire. Telling someone who is clinically depressed that his life is objectivly fantastic does not help in any way. Neither can you cure schizophrenia by telling people that the voices they hear and things they see aren`t there. devvydowner: welcome! It is great to get your perspective.

I don't know if I even said it yet, Welcome devvyd, it is good to have you and I give you Kudos to "come out" here on PD taking this huge risk of being totally shunned and virtually screamed at, which didn't happen and I am glad about that. I have always been interested in how people with BIID see themselves and what they feel and you wrote about all of it so open and so descriptive and brutally honest without coming across creepy or weird. I love your open and honest description of what you are going through and I hope for the devotee aspect you hang around and become part of this group of people.

I'm not denying whether DevvyD's feelings/emotions are real-they are. But, I'm concerned whether she (or anyone else) REALLY knows what they are wishing for

As she said above, no. But even if she (or anyone else) knew-knew how awful a SCI is, it wouldn`t change anything re the "brain going haywire".

Because DD is actually me ;-) D'oh! My first week and already I'm just trampling around like a bull in a china shop. My sincere apologies. And hey! Everybody! Stop calling me DD! How 'bout I just go by "DevvyD"? (Thank you for the welcome). There is a "Tenacious D", so why not a "Devvy D"?! You are "Devvy D" from now on And I thought it was an elephant in a china shop?

If anyone is interested, here's a really wonderful article on BIID, from a disabled scholar. My favorite part is the bit about disability-as-body-art. I loved this quote! Thank you foe sharing this, DevvyD!
