I’ve been binging on manga with blind guy characters lately, so much of it is really terrible but I thought I’d share anyway. [Sen] Zyouya no chigiri by Okadaya Tetsuzoh M-M erotica set in historical Japan with some supernatural content. Sensai is a soul-eater disguised as a (partially) blind masseur who travels around with his samurai boyfriend granting wishes to desperate people. The art is really beautiful but the dev factor was only moderate for me because the blindness is not treated very realistically. The weird title makes it hard to search but you can read all 2 volumes here: mangarock.com/manga/mrs-serie-200078410/chapter/mrs-chapter-200078596Koko ni aru kimi no oto Also m-m erotica with a blind masseur, this time set in contemporary Japan. A TV drama writer goes to a hot springs resort on vacation and falls for the blind guy employed at the inn to give massages. It’s so slight I can’t even remember if I read this before but the guy is super cute, even if the writing is pretty weak. mangakakalot.com/chapter/koko_ni_aru_kimi_no_oto/chapter_1Flawless Indonesian webtoon about a middle school girl who falls for a blind guy. The writing is very childish and like a lot of webtoons the pace is unbearably slow. But even though the plot is ridiculous and makes no sense I kind of have a soft spot because it’s the kind of thing I might have written as a kid, or at least the guy is a character I might have invented when I was much younger. translate.webtoons.com/viewer?webtoonNo=590&episodeNo=2&language=ENG&teamVersion=19Golden Kamuy super violent action manga, about criminals in northern Japan in the early 20th century. A gang of blind guys shows up in chapter 119. They are the bad guys but it’s still kind of interesting. mangarock.com/manga/mrs-serie-87862/chapter/mrs-chapter-100095674Abyss Rage by Narita Nariaki Super violent martial arts manga about a blind guy martial arts master named Shinobu. His girlfriend is kidnapped and he’s forced to battle dozens of criminals to the death to get her back. This manga is objectively terrible—the art is bad, the writing is dumb, it’s sexist and homophobic. And yet to my shame I find it devvy as hell. Shinobu is so cute and I love the way he uses echolocation when he’s fighting. I’m embarrassed to even mention this title but if you liked Shigurui you might like this too. So I guess it’s official, I will read and enjoy any old trash as long as there is a cute blind guy in it. 😂 Girl, I GET IT! I've been on a trashy blind guy fiction binge for the last week. I read likem 7 short novels and I don't think even one of them would be considered anything but guilty pleasure! 😂 but heym I'm having fun so.... 🤷♀️

Haha I'm so glad you get it! Please share the titles of the novels you have been reading, even if they are trashy. Guilty pleasures are more fun when shared.

Haha I'm so glad you get it! Please share the titles of the novels you have been reading, even if they are trashy. Guilty pleasures are more fun when shared. Sure! So I just finished Taste of Love by Elizabeth Glenn. It was pretty melodramatic and over the top, but then again, that's kinda what I want out of a guilty pleasure anyway. The guy was not newly blinded at all though, he was very independent and sexy (at least I thought so). So, if you don't mind some cheesy ass dialogue. I'd recomend it. Then I read Echoes in the Dark by Guylle Wilson. That was better, had a telenovela vibe going on that I thought was pretty fun. Pretty good dev factor, but nothing outstanding really. If you can suspend your disbelief for long enough, it's a solind 4 stars for me And the last one I read that I actually enjoyed is called Romancing the Duke by Tessa Dare. Not very acurate in how blindness actually works, but then again they rarely are right? Mostly it's just a cute romance with some nice dev scenes written into it. Other than that I re read Love is Blind and Blind impulse for the millionth time and am now reading The good body by Bill Gaston, and that is about a guy that has just been diagnosed with MS. I'm not even 50 pages into it though, so I really can't say much about quality or dev factor yet.

Thanks for sharing! I have read all of those. 🙂 Taste of Love is surprisingly good for such an old book. I am sure Elizabeth Glenn was a dev, all her books featured disabled heroes. She wrote under a few other names too but always the same themes. I’m so curious about her, I wish there was some way to interview her or something. I wonder if she knew other devs exist.

devogirl, have you read the Katla books by Martin V. Halm? Really good. Bram is perfect.

Yes I have! Actually I was a beta reader for book 3. I agree, Bram is soooo sexy. After the first book came out I posted a review here and the author was really surprised to find out he had dev women fans. But to his credit, he leaned into it and Bram became a bigger and bigger character. But sadly I thought the 4th book was not as good. It was like he retconned Bram to be superhuman and also a yakuza boss. He just changed the character too much. The ending hints at more books in the series but it's been years now, so there might not be any more.
Also I just read a historical romance called The Spice Merchant's Wife by Charlotte Betts. It's set in London in 1666, the year of the Great Fire, with a blind hero named Gabriel Harte who makes perfume. This had so much potential--Gabriel is super sexy and breaks the usual romance stereotypes. By the time the heroine meets him, he's been blind for years and is fully adjusted, so no nursemaid nonsense, and he is charming and debonair, not bitter and angry. Hooray! But when the hero and heroine meet, they are both married to other people and it takes until literally the last pages of the book before they get together. There's never a chance to see them truly together. Also the heroine somehow intuits modern guide dog techniques and in a week or so trains a stray dog to be a guide dog complete with harness. That had me rolling my eyes so hard. I really hate it when authors of historical fiction shoehorn in modern adaptive technology. It breaks the suspension of disbelief, and for a book that was otherwise very well researched, it was so disappointing.

I have been bingeing Flawless, the Indonesian webtoon I mentioned earlier, and I have totally changed my opinion. OMG you guys it’s so good! It is super long and takes forever to get going though. It’s about a teenage boy named Elios who is blind from birth, but has Daredevil-like super senses, which he keeps secret. He’s handsome and charming, but also can be rather self-centered. The story follows his romance with a girl named Sarah. In the first season, they are in middle school, and the artist draws Elios with his hair covering his eyes, but in the last chapter of the season, when he admits to Sarah that he likes her, he finally shows his eyes and omg I about died. Look at this screen shot! Is he not totally adorable? This is exactly the manga character I would have drawn as a teenager if I could draw. Anyway season 2 jumps forward to when Elios and Sarah are in year 2 of high school together, and that’s when the story really starts to take off. The examination of bullying, popularity, friendship, and disability is so good. By the end of season 2 I was totally blown away. Starting season 3 now, hopefully it stays just as good and the translators get around to finishing. It’s still ongoing, and the art is great, although not fully translated yet. I highly recommend it, I’m finding it super devvy. If you’re impatient start with chapter 50, where it starts getting good, but accept that you will miss a few plot elements. ETA: It has been fully translated here. Also if you search around the site you can find translations to French, Spanish and probably other languages too. Attachment Deleted

pam , that is a "go to" book for me when I am in the mood for some devy romance. I've read it numerous times along with Falling from the Sky and A Marriage to Fight For. All of them push my wheeler dev buttons . I took this advice and I am in the middle of Falling from the sky and I love it, too!! i keep listening to it on my way to and from work. It was really devy and hot this morning. Good thing people on the road don’t hear what I’m listening to

Omg you guys this web comic Flawless just keeps getting better and better. Season 3 is amazing. Sorry to keep going on and on about it but it’s seriously the most devvy thing I have read in ages and I am obsessed. There are a few additional blind characters who get a lot more development in season 3, two girls who are classmates of Elios in high school. There is so much reflection on how they are all different, how each of them deals with disability and friendship/romance, I really have to wonder if the author is maybe a dev. Anyway seasons 1 and 2 (in the first half) still have a lot of childish elements but by season 3 it’s so good. It’s also amazing to read a story in which the blind guy is not just the romantic lead but all the girls are swooning over him (although the story does touch on issues of discrimination and stereotyping). And all the comments by readers are also about how sexy and cool he is. It really puts all those crappy romance novels to shame, with their identical brooding asshole blind guys. Just start right with season 3: translate.webtoons.com/viewer?webtoonNo=590&episodeNo=113&language=ENG&teamVersion=0
