I hope that everyone has a soft place to land this Thanksgiving. I'm blessed with a smallish, but tight family that lives close enough to easily get together. Not everybody has that. If you don't have plans and feel like doing something, definitely make an effort and call around - see what everyone in your circle is up to. Go to someplace you enjoy. If you're stuck in bed, order up your favorite takeout and watch some great movies. Whatever. Do something different, anything. This holiday is always a fun affair for me. My brother and his lot (wife, 3 kids) join my parents and I at the ranch. The house fills with anticipation as the smells get more intense Mom slaves most of the day while everyone pretends to want to help, but mostly finds other, more "important" tasks to do. This includes driving 4-wheelers, playing with the dogs, wrenching on cars, complaining about why they keep showing Detroit Lions games, snacking, and generally doing our best to entertain 3 kids. Dinner is the usual, turkey, stuffings, mashed potatoes and gravy, more gravy, green beans, did I say gravy?, pumpkin pie, etc... Though, we do two turkeys because my dad prefers his smoked and not everyone enjoys that. He's in charge of that operation. There's ALWAYS some kind of mini-crisis when dad cooks anything. He's just like Clarke Griswold in that way. I wouldn't change anything, except maybe I'd help my mum clean up if I could! What does Thanksgiving look like for the rest of you turkeys?

The morning was all about mimosas, croissants and Nutella, and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
We made fajitas for lunch and snacked on chips and salsa.
This evening we're watching Elf and getting Chinese takeaway.
Sometimes I do the big meal with the family favorites passed down through the generations. It depends on who's going where. This year my older two kids are doing Thanksgiving with their in-laws.
I might do the big feast for Christmas. I might just have it in between. It varies from year to year.
But at least once a year we break out the good china, decipher old, old recipes and do it up.
I started brining the turkey in Jack Daniels several years ago, so everyone wants that. And stuffing. We have my grandmother's cherry jello, my exes' grandmother's sweet potatoes. My step-mother's mashed potatoes, my gravy, my sister's broccoli salad... And my pumpkin pie and paper bag apple pie.
We often try new recipes, too.
It's a lot of food and a lot of fun cooking food the same way our grandparents did (so.much.butter.).

It's amazing!! It doesn't taste like booze but the turkey is really moist and flavorful. You said "moist." Seriously though, that sounds great. I love meats marinated in various alcohols, but I never considered doing a turkey that way.

That sounds like an expensive marinade! Is it 100% JD or mixed with other things? I have brined turkeys but don't think its worth the hassle of getting out the cooler. I prefer the drying them out in the fridge and then slathering them in butter and herbs. If you don't want to bother with that, the turkey bag in the oven is an easier method.

I think brining makes a huge difference. I always use the Pioneer Woman's brine and then her recipe for roasting. Never had a better turkey in my life!
We went to my brother's new house near Boston this year. He grilled the turkey. GRILLED it. He did a test run the week before and overcooked it. On Thanksgiving he was nervous about doing that again and he undercooked it. I did not each much turkey.
