I just came home from church, and will be with my parents for dinner shortly.
We will have so-called “Raclette” for dinner which is traditionally made on Christmas or New Year’s Eve since it takes a while to eat. There is a small oven sitting in the middle of the table and every dinner-participant has their own little frying pan. Traditionally you take cooked potatoes and let the Raclette-cheese melt over them but you can mix it up with all sorts of different food such as pepper, olives, onions, sausage. Additionally on top of the oven is a grill. There everyone can grill some steak pieces or shrimps. I’m getting hungry now....
I wish you all a merry Christmas. 🎁🔔🎄

Not only does it sound delicious, but what a great way to get everyone to participate. I'm heading to a candle light service tonight at a new little country church with my folks, nephew, and niece. I heard there would be free cookies there, so it shouldn't be TOO bad. I do like the part at the end of these services when it's dark save for the faint flickering candle lights. It's a nice, peaceful moment. Our family does all the gift exchanging on Christmas Eve (tonight) because it's always been easier to gather everyone together then instead of on Xmas day. After about noon on Christmas day I suspect that I'll want nothing to do with anything Christmas - that after a month of build up I'll have reached my saturation point and be ready to move on! That said, Merry Christmas!

Spending Christmas with the family for a couple of days then off to the Scottish highlands to stay in a log cabin for new year with friends, should be interesting in the wheels if the snow arrives! ❄️⛄️ Oh wow, the highlands at any time of year are so beautiful, but new year in a log cabin sounds amazing. Was it hard to find an accessible one ?

Yes I have to agree with you it’s such beautiful scenery, finding an accessible one wasn’t too bad to be honest, if your prepared to sit for hours sifting through the endless pages on the internet that is☺️

My family either does that or fondue for Christmas eve. This year it was fondue. Where are you from that it is traditional to have on xmas or new years eve? My Dad was from Switzerland which is how I know about the meal.

Raclette sounds amazing, our Christmas Eve Supper was just Cheese and Crackers, something which I love despite it being so plain on paper.
Of course, the cheese you pick is important, as is the port you have with it......
[Cheese lecture redacted]
Merry Christmas PD, hope y'all have a good 'un.

I don’t think it was a traditional thing over here forever but it’s pretty common that lots of people do that nowadays. We have friends in Switzerland, so we also got the information first-hand 😊 The real traditional food for Germans would be sausages and potato salad on Christmas Eve. Don’t know why that is, but I think it adapted since it can be prepared in advance. So people go to church, come home, heat the sausage and eat them with the salad.
