Hi friends,
I wanted to share this little story with you.
I went out last night to a concert at a popular venue. I really like the place and in the concert hall, there was only standing room. There is also a Mezzanine Balcony which I have been up on at another event. It overlooks the dance floor/hall and great view to the stage. Sometimes that balcony is open, sometimes not, depends on the event and how many tickets they sold.
Well, I was down on the dance floor and looked up and saw the balcony had some people on it so I thought, oh cool, let's go up there and check it out to see if there are any seats available. I have to add, I had been hurting from working/standing all day and my leg and foot is giving me a lot of problems lately. So I kinda wanted to sit for a bit.
We go up there, the door is closed with a big female security guard in front. We show her our stamped wrists, proving that we have tickets for the event. She explains that she does have a few spots in there (capacity is 45) and yes, we may go in but we have to stay away from the assigned and reserved ADA seats. And she says that very important like "ADA" this and "ADA" that. I'm like thinking to myself, no problem for me at all, dear woman, I totally get it, so please open the door for me so I can enter the candy shop π
Well, the candy shop wasn't all that, good, yummy looking candy wasn't in there, more like old licorice and toffees aka a few eldery persons in wheelchairs or with walker or not visble but still on their assigned/reserved ADA seats.
I'm cool with that, happy they are actually doing something on grounds of ADA, accessibilty for PWD and all that. Well, there is one chair with a reserved for C.S. (not putting the whole name) and next to it on the ground an area taped up with white tape. I'm assuming it's either for C.S.'s wheelchair or maybe the person accompanying C.S. may need a wheelchair spot. But they are not there, the chair is empty, the spot is empty.
We stand behind the empty chair, holding on to the backrest, and enjoying the concert from above and my leg and foot hurt A LOT and it's torture to look at the empty chair in front of me. But oh well, I want to obey. Security guard comes in and praises us how we are standing "behind" the chair because it's ADA, she emphasizes again, taking her job super serious.
This being said, the concert has been going on for about two hours, so we are half way done. I don't think C.S. is showing up anytime soon or maybe not at all anymore so I dare to sit on the reserved chair, just for a bit, if C.S. shows up I will totally move, NO PROBLEM AT ALL.
Security guard comes in on her round again and leans down to me "Are you C.S.?" and I'm like "No." She gets all nasty and tells me I need to get up from that chair because it's ADA reserved and I dare to say, "Well, if the person shows up I will gladly leave, no problem." I want to say more stuff like how important I think ADA is, and how I love all PWD and some of them even like A LOT to a point where she would probably blush if I told her the truth π at how much I love them π
Well, I get up and she keeps up her reprimanding me and I'm like thinking to myself "Just shut up now, I get it. Yes ADA."
She says even if the person doesn't show up the seat is still reserved. Duh, wth!
Anyways, C. S. never showed up, the chair stayed unoccupied all night. We ended up finding an even better spot to sit up there that was not reserved and a lot more comfy.
I was annoyed with the security guard and I know she is just trying to do her job but this made no sense. C.S. didn't show up, if they would have I would have not even batted an eye and got up. It would have literally not even been an issue.
So, me, dev Dani gets reprimanded on grounds of ADA, kind of ironic I thought π If this security guard would only know how I really feel and that I have been very much checking out all the accessibilty features in this establishment since it opened a couple of months ago (this was an old, abandoned building that has been restored so awesome and made into a hotel and entertainment space with bars, concert hall and everything, some of you may know the McMenamins group who does this), that I checked for the elevators and even saw the pull out ramp to get up stairs for wheelchairs and also making sure the toilets are spacious for the disabled. If she would only know...
Anyways, so much for that, hope it was entertaining to read...and oh, by the way, will the hot guy in red T-Shirt in wheelchair zooming by me on the main floor, close to main entrance please send me a message if he happens to be here on PD π
