The family and friends thread posted by @delight made me think of a post made yesterday by a chap I follow on another site.
"It's been a year since I returned to work after my injury...
...Returning to work was one of the best things to happen post injury, letting everyone know that apart from being shorter, I'm still me, just with more things to take the mick out of and have a laugh."
His post got me wondering for our PWDs with acquired disabilities what was the reaction of people you knew but beyond your immediate family and friends to your new situation?

I am not sick or disabled, but... I started working super young, and resigned when a loved one got sick. Although they were ill, their death a few months after my resignation was a complete surprise. I had resigned, moved to a different state, and they passed away months later. I returned to work 2.5 years later. "OH, I heard you were back," with pitying eyes. Or, the dreaded, "How ARE you?!" I reacted with smartass humor, like the "old" me would do. I think everyone knows I'm different. Embracing that different is hard, but there's still a lot of heart and a lot of good within her. I think this is a really good question, and I hope my stupid response will generate meaningful responses from others. <3
