Arthur the Army Ant
by
Anthony Rain Starez
No weather could be more ideal to an ant than the bolstering humid heat of Florida in August, and on this day Arthur, one of the many ant soldiers belonging to the largest ant hill in Mr. McGee's yard, was assigned to hunting food for the thousands of worker ants back home. Food being anything that looked like a few hundred ants could carry back to the barracks.
As Arthur trudged over the tall weeds and branches looking for any sign of discarded candy wrappers, half-eaten sandwiches or a tasty child's ankle he came upon a beautiful butterfly who was tangled in an old fishing net that some human had thrown in the grass.
Putting his trumpet to his mouth Arthur almost sounded the alarm which would bring many more ants to the potential food source. But Arthur hesitated for a moment to examine the brilliant colors of the snared butterfly. It's safe to say Arthur was compelled, he stood quietly watching the butterfly flutter her magnificent wings in an effort to be free. The reds, yellows, blues, greens and purple spots amazed him, and for a full minute Arthur forgot why he was there in the first place.
It was now that the flashy butterfly became aware of Arthur watching from behind a thin blade of grass. She called out to him for help, "Ohhhh you've come just the right time, won't you please help me out of this darn net?"
Now Arthur knew his strict orders to sound the alarm immediately when faced with an animal in distress, for this could be needed food for the army back at the ant mound. But as much as Arthur tried to force himself to blow the trumpet, he could not.
Sensing the situation more clearly, the delicate butterfly looked deeply into Arthur's eyes and said softly, "Please Mr. Ant, I know you're a soldier ant with orders, but I want so badly to live...there are little ones that depend on me, and the smell of the trees is a wonderful thing to live for...Ohhh, I'd give anything to feel the sweet rain that cools my wings again."
Hanging his head Arthur thought of the betrayal he would commit to his own kind... but he could not imagine watching this incredible creature of so many colors be cannibalized and robbed of life just to sustain another's.
The sweet cool rain began to gently fall from the sky and Arthur then thought of how he too loved nature's sky-water just like the butterfly, and how these simple pleasures were a common thread of life...tying all creatures to each other whether they look alike or not.....
Arthur looked up at the helpless butterfly and shouted to her, "Yes, I will help you...." Arthur began cutting away the net with his sharp pincers, soon freeing the butterfly.
"Whenever it rains I will think of you," smiled the butterfly as she spread her large wings and took flight in a graceful act of freedom.
