Doesn't anyone feel really weird meeting up or is it just me 😅 I could of easily of met people by now but something always holds me back 🤔 That's called nerves, bro. Power through them and all your wildest dreams can come true. Or you'll wake up in a bathtub full of ice missing a kidney. It's always worth the risk.

I'm really shy and I would honestly be terrified to meet anyone irl. I am not good in social situations at all, my strength is to communicate in the written word. I don't like talking on the phone, I don't do facetime or such things, not even really with my own family, I find it awkward and stressful. We did have a dev/disabled guys meeting years ago in Las Vegas. It was interesting.

Isn't it terribly unlikely that IRL (or should I say AFK) meetings could really happen, considering this is a global community forum? I mean, if two people have a connection here online, they might be (probably are) millions of miles apart.

PD is a community that might be quite small according to numbers and yes, people are from the whole world, but we have something unique that we share and that is hard to find elsewhere. There are lots of threads with stories where members met up that show that for a human connection, people are willing to make little sacrifices like meeting someone who is not from your neighbourhood. I have met a few members over the years, I think the biggest distance was 1000km, the smallest was maybe 2km, because I had the incredible luck that there was another dev in my town back then. I haven't regretted a single one of these meetings. IRL meetings are probably not going to happen without trust and a certain willingness to travel and take a chance. But I know many members have done this, mostly after weeks, months and sometimes years of getting to know each other online. I have met another PD member IRL this year who I had known for about 4 years at the time, just through communicating online. Look around a bit, the stories are there.

Considering the amount of people in this very thread who have met up with other members, no it's not terribly unlikely. And no one here is millions of miles apart, the earths diameter is only 7,926 miles (12,756 km).

I've met several of you weirdos. So far so good, hopefully I'll meet a few more. This forum has lead me to some wonderful friends.

It is terribly unlikely if you think it's terribly unlikely.

I just remembered I have met with a dev here in my area a few years back, we had a great time, talking dev stuff and getting to know each other. I was still nervous to meet her but it happened and since we were both nervous, it worked out. She is not active on the board anymore. I also remember that she had met with other members of the board.
And as I am writing this, I just remembered, I met up with a guy from the board from Europe visiting Seattle. I don't know how I forgot about this stuff, Covid brain I guess! We spent a few hours in Seattle, getting to know each other and chatting dev and disability stuff (he is blind), which was actually super interesting to me. We had a great time!
So, though I am awkward in social situations, if anyone ever comes this way, let me know and we can meet up!

I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting anyone from the site. If there ever was or a chance to, I would be happy to get to know someone first if that were to ever happen. Granted, I'm not always online but always reply. I guess I am still a little old school harkening back to folding fancy notes and passing them off during school. I have met up with a few locals but nothing overly serious. I have stayed in touch with a few but hope to see a friendly face now that the vaccines have been going around for a while now. This community has been nothing but accepting and I have got nothing but love for the devs and wheelers who keep it going.

Dani, that was me that got together with her. Now it needs to be our turn. I’m back in Washington now. I’ve met up with a couple guys from here. One ended up being fairly close (about 5 hrs) but the other was in Australia which I had always wanted to visit, so what the heck 😁. I was horribly nervous and anxious both times but was no need. Both guys charming and fun and had a great time. Both are friends now and we keep in touch often but because of different interests with the one and distance & age with the other, we did not pursue. Neither are on here any longer.

I know of 6 devs who live within a hours drive from where I am. But then i live in a densly populated area so there is probably a numbers game going on. Alas Im knocking on a bit now so dont have the energy to go touring the North paying visits. Just cant manage the demand for the 'wheelin rythmn' like I used to. 🙄 my poor aching shoulders and elbows cant take it 😪
