Definitely go see Inglourious Basterds, bananas, it was excellent, you'll like it especially if you've enjoyed Tarantino's other films. I thought Public Enemies was good as well, too.
Claire, you bring up a good point about future tech.; the only explanation I could bs, is that the private market doesn't get a hold of neat and cool technologies until the military and government are done with them, and they appear to be utilizing the high-tech the most in the trailer...and we don't really know how far into the future this really is...the technology is likely a flawed innovation that is just emerging, so the neat little high-tech stuff is probably in its infancy. Not to mention, space travel is a whole different ballpark compared to biology and medicine...

Have you gals seen Tom Cruse in Born on the 4th of July? he was trained to use a chair by my OT and PT at the Baylor Rehab center in Dallas Texas where i had my rehab... I know that has nothing to do with the topic but seeing an AB playing a wheeler reminded me of that. if you want to hear the storys that my OT told me about the making of the movie let me know. He went on location ith them as a tec advisor.

He is very cute. Why do these movies and shows like Dark Angel have to involve a miraculous cure all the time? Why is it not just ok to have the hero be in his chair and stay in his chair? Why is that not possible? It happens in real life. Why does everyone have to be 'fixed' in the movies?

Well, the guy in the chair might want that miraculous cure...it doesn't make sense, scientifically...but on the wheeler end of the bargain, the miraculous cure is looking pretty good...

They feel the need to "fix" us because the perception is that we're broken.

They feel the need to "fix" us because the perception is that we're broken. I don't think it's so wrong. Physically we are "broken" and I'd imgine that given the choice, most paras and quads would take the "fix" option at injury time. I know I would have. It's not a big difficult decision. In one second, I went from being a fit, healthy, active bipedal 18 year old to having 75% of my body seemingly belong to someone else. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bitter or even angry about it. It happened and there was no alternative but to get on with things. Of course I would have said "fix it" but if I could go back in time now and "fix it" would I choose to? I honestly am not 100% certain but I suspect that I'd choose not to. OK some days it sucks big time but many good things and good people are in my life because of it as well. Chances are I would not live where I do and have the good friends that I have. On the other hand I would likely have had a family and my mother would have had grandchildren. It could still have occurred but I was never the possessor of good dating skills and this got worse after my injury. I gave up a couple of good chances at relationships early on with great women as I didn't want to burden their lives with mine and of course they moved on with their lives. It just became easier to not bother with it. That is something I do regret but it was my choice so I live with that and it's Ok. I do keep trying though. (Still no good at it). OK that got off track a bit. If I could "fix" the physical issues instantly without consequences, would I? Very likely.

I think most everyone would take "the fix." That's not really the point, though. The fix isn't here, and who knows when, if ever, it will?
The perception generated is that we aren't whole, and we don't live complete lives seated. The hero gets "the fix" and suddenly not only does he get the girl, but life is picture perfect.
It just perpetuates negative stereotypes about us.

It just perpetuates negative stereotypes about us. Not really. It's just TV and movies; lands where they like to have happy endings. Not based in reality mostly. Most shows that have been more reality based don't have those outcomes necessarily. The wheeler guy does not walk and often does not get the girl in spite of the show trying to give the message that he is just like his abled bodied counterpart. Real life is like that sometimes. The friend gets the girl instead.

Definitely go see Inglourious Basterds, bananas, it was excellent It's about a bunch of poor spellers who try to kill Hitler. When asked Tarantino didn't explain the extra "u" but said "that is how we say it, basterds". In OZ it would be "Inglorious Barstds". Cut short like "Melb'n". Quentin leave the language alone.

Sorry, lost control of my faculties there for a second and didn't even read the rest of the thread where you're all getting serious until Neffie turns up and starts hyperventilating!!!
Regardless of my tendancies which are suddenly overwhelming I do hope for a cure obviously. I think whether someone is "cured" or not, the experience will have changed them anyway and I think that's at the crux of the matter. In a way I think that's what attracts me as much as the physical side. Not like becoming a wheeler turns someone into this noble and worthy person necessarily but that they understand things that most men will never comprehend.
Does that make sense? Ahhhh who cares *goes to look at picture again*
