I don't really enjoy watching sports an awful lot, but parasports have a certain appeal, for obvious reasons I had a phase last spring, when I watched a lot of wheelchair rugby on Youtube and a few weeks ago I discovered something new: Paraclimbing. My little brother is a climber and he watches these climbing competitions and some time during this summer he came to me super-excited and told me about these badass blind people, who climb. Turned out there were also badass amputees, who climb Needless to say, I was a very proud dev sister that day. My brother's not at all the type to get "inspired" by anything and he didn't think it was "inspirational" either. Just legitimately cool and badass So I watched a little bit of it with him, which was really nice and exciting! Here are some of the highlights from the world championships this summer, in case anyone is interested: So, question for the devs: Are there any parasports you particularly like to watch? And to the guys: Do you watch or play any sports? And do you prefer watching parasports or regular sports?

I've never watched any except for brief snippets. But I have always wanted to watch a wheelchair basketball game in real life. When I was young I would fantasize that I was a cheerleader for a wheelchair basketball team😁 and I, of course, was dating one of the members😋

I'm usually not interested in watching any sports. I never thought of watching paralympics or anything. If I come across a sports channel and see a wheeler match, I can happily switch the channel to something else.

So I am from Vancouver where the 2010 paralympics winter games were held, and we had a blast. I took my kids to so many events and we had more fun the during the Olympics. We watched relays, hockey ... a lot of hockey .... lol. The athletes always came out to take pics with kids. They enjoyed really enjoyed it. I have also taken them to watch wheelchair rugby when it was in town. Also when they were younger, and we all got really into it. Nothing recent tho.

I like to watch MMA and boxing. I like to fantasize that I would have ended up in one of these Sports if I didn't end up disabled.

I've been thinking about going to an event like that forever, but for most of my life I just wouldn't have dared to - for some vague and paranoid fear of being "found out". (You know, that feeling of having "DEV" tatooed on your forehead, whenever you encounter a PWD in real life...) I'm a little braver now, but I haven't found any events anywhere close to me recently... I would love to go to a Paraclimbing competition with my brother now, though And I just found out that the Invictus Games will be held in The Hague in 2020! Not exactly around the corner, but it would be an opportunity for weekend-trip, perhaps... Maybe it could even be used as an opportunity for a little dev-meet-up

I sometimes watch a bit of the Paralympics or Invictus games, usually recorded so not live. But I don't watch a whole lot of sports on TV, just what the men in my family watch I just watch along or sit in the same room and do other stuff like writing or reading. I'm very involved with all things soccer because my younger son has been playing since he was four and is now a club player. I know a lot of soccer fields in the state. I also enjoy following the Seattle Sounders and have been to their games. And being German I have that soccer thing inside of me...lol I also enjoy Swimming competitions, my older son was a swimmer and diver in High School, so I have been to many pools as well...lol I guess I do enjoy watching Swimming in the disability events. But Soccer is the sport that interests me most, and that will unfortunately never be played by guys in wheelchairs

Hello! I have honestly never liked watching sports, not either as an able-bodied (I am a former 800 metres runner). Now I enjoy a lot doing handcycling...I guess it is worth a check. I work out everyday, because I'm doing my best to be able to take as many medals I can from the Italians' hands, but I think it can give a lot also when doing it just for fun. Bye bye

Bye bye Another former track guy, awesome. I ran an 800 once (in 9th grade and almost died). I later ran a 600 indoors when I was running for Boise State, that was my max distance I could spring at before my legs turned to jelly. My bread and butter was the hurdles, 110's and 400's. Now my main sport is wheelchair basketball. There is a great league here in the States, 3 adult co-ed divisions, 1 women's adult division, 3 kid divisions, and a college division. I play for the San Diego Wolfpack. We are primarily a military team, but we fill in our roster with low point civilians. We travel quite a bit, I think we are going to Cleveland, Dallas, Phoenix, Grand Rapids MI, Washington D.C. and nationals is in Wichita. I still prefer watching able-bodied sports over para sports, but if I will go out of my way to watch a match-up of the top ranked wheelchair basketball teams going head to head.

Talking about parasports, I think Aikido is the ideal sport for disabled people. It’s a Japanese martial art that is based on the principle of redirecting the energy or power back to the aggressor instead of bringing it up by oneself. There is this movie „AIKI“, based on a true story, about a young guy who gets injured in a motorcycle crash. He starts to practice Aikido, and it is very interesting and impressive how he learns to do it from the wheelchair, experimenting with physical laws such as that it’s helpful to release the brakes when receiving the attack to be able to redirect it smoothly back. (Side note: The main cast Haruhiko Kato is pretty damn sexy as well, it’s a devvy movie...) I tried to find it on the net, I remember to have seen it once in Japanese with Spanish subtitles. 😂 But it seems to be not available anymore. At least I found the trailer: mydramalist.com/22950-aiki/trailers/8610And another interesting clip:

Coincidentally I've for some strange reason been wanting to try rock climbing... I'm a triple amputee, feet and hand, so I'm not sure how that would work out. Usually I just go for it with stuff but for some reason this idea has me stumped (pun?).. Or more likely intimidated. I don't like people helping me and this concept seems to require lots of help. I doubt I could ever put those shoes on myself or the harness. I never have been interested in team style sports but I do run (10km longest so far). And I also ride bike and downhill ski (usually at whistler). I have watched para sports (olympics) and definitely enjoy that, fully inspiring.

I've been running, skiing, riding with strangers I've met along the way and never considered there was anything to "find out" because there probably wasn't. Even if there was...
