I'm curious to know if there are things you'd say here if you knew that the guys absolutely wouldn't be able to read it?

I pretend to myself that the guys aren't reading and I hate when that illusion is shattered!
Yes, there are things that I say in Dev-only Skype or yahoo chat with the other girls that I don't say here.

Yes I agree, I say things that I don't write. If your asking because you want to make a separate private group I don't think I'd write that stuff anywhere since they can always somehow be saved when written.

If I knew there was NO way the guys could read it, then yes, I'm sure I would be a little more open. Probably not completely open as it's still a message board in cyberspace, but a little more open. As it is, this is one of the reasons why this board confuses me. We all KNOW the guys read it. We can pretend they don't but it's just an illusion. Even if they don't come on this thread with the intentions of reading, these posts are displayed when someone clicks the "10 most recent posts" link. I may be a little more open on this board then the others but I still always have a little voice in my head telling me that nothing on the internet is ever truly private.

I cant think of anything I have ever wanted to post but didn't because of the men. Maybe I would think differently if I knew that was a reality, but as of yet there is nothing I haven't said that I wished I could.
I have always thought of the devs only section as a part section where the guys can't comment... but I am fully aware they read.

Yes, there are things I discuss off board that I tend to censor, tone down or re-word to post here. It is a combination of it being a 'public cyber space' as well as knowing that I could be hurting someone by saying it.

This is a good reminder that this entire board is not a private site. Only members can post, and only devs can post in this section, but anyone at all can read everything posted here, and your posts will stay up forever unless you delete them. Also everything posted anywhere on this board is searchable on google or anywhere else. Not trying to shut down conversation, but it's just something to keep in mind.

Oh and BTW if you are looking for a devs group that is totally private and female-only there is this one: groups.yahoo.com/group/The_Devotee_Dialogues/But it has a tiny membership and almost no traffic. Still, I bet if several people started posting regularly it would pick up.

Thanks, devogirl. I'll join there. (Or try.) After a conversation with some other devs who were not pleased over the issue, (long while back) I opened a board somewhere else but nobody was interested in posting there. lol So, I was curious if it really WAS a serious issue to anyone or not. I think I'm gonna delete it all.... it's just taking up cyberspace. But, yeah, it's good to always remember that the entire board is public.

Hmm. I think maybe there are things I might not say here, but at the same time I think it's so important that a lot of the things we DO say are said in a public space. To link to another thread that's been running at the moment (to do with whether we have the responsibility to go public) there is definitely a need for the "real" stuff to be out there and available, if for no other reason than to dispel some of the stereotypes surrounding devoteeism out there. Many of us, too, I think would still be out in the cold feeling like lonely freaks if we hadn't been able to lurk in the devs-only section for a while...I think a bit of openness is not a bad thing At the same time this places quite a burden on the moderators... For those worried about privacy, as has been mentioned before, there's always chat, private messaging and of course separate, carefully managed online dev-identities It might be interesting to post a similar thread to this in the open section to see what the guys here think about what they read in the devs-only section (and how many of them read it...)

I´m fully aware of the presence of the guys in here. As always, I thank you guys for be so gentlemen as not to post.
I usually restraint what I say, no matter it´s a private site or not. In part it´s because sometimes it´s difficult for me to translate my ideas and opinions when these are in my head in Spanish!
And, secondly, as I said on another occasion, the Argentines are very visceral, we swear a lot... all day, it´s a part of our language, it´s the way we are. And that ... is very difficult to restrain, to avoid hurting sensibilities.
Imagine this... when a friend calls the initial salutation could be: "Che... qué hacés, boludo, tanto tiempo!?" "Che (it has no translation)... what´s up, asshole!... it´s been a long time!."
So, knowing that... how can you be a "free speaker"!? LOL...

I've been contemplating an "ask a dev" section where anyone can ask anything, and someone (me or whoever else feels up to it) can answer. I get so many questions on a pretty regular basis, and many of them are the same questions...so I thought it might be interesting to see if it worked in a more formal setting, rather than just in individual chats, etc. Love this idea. Do it!

I've started mixing my dev/real identity. I no longer have any reason to stay "hidden". Besides, the people I talk to off board all know who I am, anyway. I also agree with the idea that the more info available, the better. In any case, I agree with the idea of this as a "private" space, if only in the imagination. Nothing here is sacred, everything is out there. The internet is not private. But to have a place to ask questions among ourselves, to express frustration, or even to just hang out and cry sometimes is pretty cool. Knowing that this is open does add a dimension of exhibitionism for me, too, I guess. I have to admit, my initial reaction to the posted totally private, female-only link was, why would you want that? LOL mostly kidding... + 1 Merry and Luracita ( )
