My mom has a Nikomat from the early '70s that she refuses to give up. I think she likes chatting with the people at the grocery store where she gets her stuff developed

Does anyone use a 35mm SLR? I love mine, despite the 'hassle' of having to wait to see them, and then paying to have the scanned. I have a decent digital, but nothing makes me happier the whipping out my 35 and a macro lens! I have a bunch. (I collect them) I still use my Nikon FM on a regular basis. But my true love is my Hasselblad. 6x6 negatives are a dream. Awwwwwwwwesome

So, the below is with my little trooper Sony Cybershot. This alleyway is really beautiful, which helps...there's birdsong that plays from speakers, and it's just set back from a really busy street. This is with my Canon EOS with a fancypants lens. I think I still love this picture...I was obsessed with it for months after I took it, mostly because I love the cold, but everyone loves a snowflake, right? I think digital and scanned film pics always look equally crisp on screen, but you can always tell when they are printed...the below pic rings like a bell when you see it 'in the flesh'. Hope you all like them both

Peony- love these! The birdhouses are amazing. Can't believe you took that with a point and shoot! Great photo skills!

I have a little point-and-shoot Canon, but I really have no understanding of the light, etc. My pictures are always so grainy! I feel like they're even worse than the ones I take with my iPhone. I'd like to move up to something like a D-80 (despite the expense...), but obviously I shouldn't do so until I have a better understanding of what's going on.
Anyone have suggestions for some online tutorials or other things so I can learn about this sort of stuff?

Www.kenrockwell.com is a great place to start....his tutorials are easy to follow. But the reason your photos are grainy with your point n shoot is because you are letting the camera choose everything for you. It's just set on P or full auto. If yours has the capability to let you choose some of those settings yourself, you'll be taking better pics instantly! Set it to M and play with it....learn by doing and expet to have a lot of underexposed (dark) photos. But while you're doing that, you'll be learning about lighting and how the light works in your camera. Lighting is the most important part of photography, provided you know about composition and how to frame a good shot. Even of you don't...lighting is still the first thing you should learn about. Hope that helps.
