Thank you for the welcome messeges. But why australian for tax reasons, there's gotta be a better way. Are there many from australia here? Victoria? Well, I skulk in under the political radar as a NZer, and as thankful as I am for the Australian economy for giving us lots of money, a sweet house etc, I could never renounce my NZ citizenshup *to avoid confusion, or people thinking that there's a typo I need to fix, NZers kind of lengthen their vowels, where Australians tend to shorten then...we say [6] sux, they say siex, we say sex [sex], they say sehx...we say shup [ship], they say sheep...that kind of thing. ;D

Funny, but true. I heard a good statistic on the telly the other day. At the current rate of migration from NZ to Australia, there will be no one left in NZ by the year 2029. There will be lots of cheap real estate by then, maybe no economy at all but cheap homes.

There will be lots of cheap real estate by then, maybe no economy at all but cheap homes. Was this an Australian statistic? But yeah, the house prices in the 2 biggest cities are totally outrageous...there's always bargins in the provinces, though, but of course it depends on where you want to live. The house prices just seem so unsustainable, though. I have heard that financially, NZers who haven't bought a house (in NZ) by their early 30s are unlikely to be able to afford one ever. Stink. Anyway, hope you're enjoying the board so far

Hey yeah, I guess its much the same here as it is in NZ. My first house cost only 69,000 and it was only ten years ago. Mind you it was out in the bush. But by the time I sold it, about five years ago it went for 185,000. Im lucky and now fully own my house in the suburbs, but friends of mine also in mid to late thirties that have not bought will be renting forever, so it seems.
I have been enjoying meeting people on this board. Thanks MD

Glad to hear it! And yes...mortgages and house prices are so magically interesting when you have (or have had) one, eh? I think Australia has gone through a similar cycle... We live in WA, and people got amazing villas for about $70k, and they are worth $700k now! Gotta love appreciation!

WA, wait awhile. That's what my daughter says she lives over there. Hope the mining boom is helping you out. Not much mining going on here in melboune. We had our mining boom here about 150 years ago. You know, the gold rush. WA, Perth and freemantle are great, I was there two years ago. The chilli festival in freo was awesome, I also met the freemantle dr. Very nice with a cold beer on the water.

Yeah, the Dr is the best! But yes...WA certainly has it's own pace...honestly, it's not to my liking, but it is an amazing state in terms of biodiversity, geography and geology etc. I would kill to live in Freo, but WHOA those perfect little limestone cottages cost the earth! I always hear really good things about Melbourne...that and Tasmania are on our next domestic travel stops!
