The "cerebral posse" made me think of one of my pet peeves in all the self published fiction that I read nowadays and that is... homophone misuse! Sometimes, GROSS homophone misuse... as in it barely sounds like what it's used as. So, I thought it would be fun to list the examples we come across. lol Like... nowadays there are so many people who are balling like babies, instead of bawling. Next?

There's a twitter account I follow that does nothing but post these. Under "when spellcheck won't help" ....
Some are common misconceptions, like "wracking your brain" instead of "racking" ...

I think the one that shocked me the most was "he said it allowed". It would have never occurred to me that those two words sounded the same.
Homophones are the bane of the existence of those of us who learned written English long before we could pronounce half the words. I personally want to hit with a clue bat all those people who say "would of" (how do you mistake a verb for a preposition!!!) and "taller then me" (this one was so widespread I actually looked it up in the dictionary because I was starting to think it was me!).

Oh, and because this was clearly too off-topic for me. I once saw "paralyzed from the waste down!". Also, I've seen people who are allegedly in wheelchairs with "breaks" to stop it from moving and don't seem concerned about it

This isn't homophone misuse but it really bugs me when people write dev's when they mean devs. That's possesive right? I was never a grammar scholar. That, and my husband not proofreading his posts

Use of "dev´s" instead of "devs" in the plural also bothers me! Likewise improper use of "they´re", "there" and "their" And do not get me started on "would of" (it is "would have"/"would´ve")! Oh, and mistaking definitely for defiantly ...

Misuse of apostrophes does drive me nuts. To the point where I have been known to correct chalkboard signs at restaurants.
The homophones thing gets me too. Not to say that I don't occasionally not know which is the word I want (and thank goodness I have Ximena now to make sure for me), but for the most part I understand language by its written form and so two words that sound alike but look different are completely and totally different to me. Almost no relation. (Probably why I was never a very good poet).
I have the same thing with names. To me the name Jon is entirely and totally different from the name John, for example.

First draft of (W)hole I had "break" instead of "brake" the entire way through. I'm not sure how I didn't see it. My dad pointed it out. My mom wouldn't read the book, but my dad did and his only comment on it was that he thought I meant "brake."

I think I do that dev's thing. The internet and instant messaging has murdered my grammar skills. I meant to say, also, HELL, YEAH, to Enid earlier but forgot... because I was soliciting the link of the twitter feed/friend from Ximena...

Albeit it not being a homophone, this makes no sense to me: I don't occasionally not know...
