Hi everyone, joined a couple of days ago and had a look around, seems cool so thought I would post a bit about myself. I am 39 and from the U.K, I had a motorcycle accident a few years back and was left with a spinal cord injury and neuro problems. I am paralysed from the hips down with no feeling or movement on the left, no feeling but slight movement and strength on the right. I was recently measured up and fitted for a left leg caliper and I am still getting used to it, broke it after only 3 days, the orthotists really love me !!!!!!!javascript:add("%20:)") Smiley. I also use a wheelchair when going any distance but try to stay away from it as much as I can as I am still a little embarrassed about the whole disability thingjavascript:add("%20:(") Sad. I was using crutches up until recently and even though my left leg is completely flaccid I hid my disability quite well and other people though I had just broke my ankle or something. I have been told now that I am damaging my back even more by struggling on crutches with no bracing so I can now only walk with the caliper. I am due to be measured and fitted for a caliper on my right leg in the next few months due to loss of strength and muscle wasting.I will look like bloody Robocop by the time the ortho people have finished with me.javascript:add("%20:)") Smiley Joined the board to meet new Friends so please feel free to drop me a line or reply here. I will answer any questions I can. Hope all this makes sense Thanks for having me Stu

I love the Robocop thing. I love the whole thing. Sorry you are having a hard time adjusting to the SCI, but I am happy that you are as mobile as you can be. Welcome to the board!

Hi again and thanks for the warm welcome. Bit more about myself, I live in the U.K in the North East of England, I split with my long term girlfriend around 4 years ago and with my injury and everything to contend with I have never got round to looking for anyone else. In fact I was not even sure if anyone would want "damaged goods" so we will wait and see. I was injured in a motorcycle accident and ended up with a T12 lesion on my spinal cord which only came to light 3 years after the accident !!!!!....so my problems only started 3 years ago even though the accident happened 6 years ago !!!!!.... collapsed at work one day and was rushed into A and E and and MRI showed up a lesion which had torn open again. It took me around 8 months to get some movement back in my right leg but my left remains completely paralysed. I am having difficulty now with my right also so I am having aggressive PT on my leg to see if things improve. The leg caliper I have is the cosmetic type with bail lock hinges in sexy black leather !!!!...problem is I have broke it twice already so I go back in to see the orthotist in a few weeks to have another one made, this one will be the type that goes into the heel of your shoe as it is the plastic foot part that keeps detaching itself from the metal uprights. This type I have been told will be stronger. Hopefully at the same time I will be able to sort another caliper out for the right leg as it is really getting to weak. I never regained any feeling in either leg although I can feel some parts of my thigh on the right side and the sole of my foot on the left !!!!! I am hoping to get back to work soon but I am still unsure of a lot of things as this disability thing is pretty new to me still. Hope some of this rambling is usefull, please feel free to ask any questions. Thanks Stu ps...how come the smilies dont work in Firefox ?

No clue why the emoticons don't work for you. I rarely use them. Where have you been anyway? You disappeared. Come back.

Hi again everyone. I would just like to say sorry for not being around to answer some of the E-mails I got.....I managed to end up in hospital due to some complications and stuff and this is the first time I have been able to get back on my home computer. If anyone has mailed me in the last month or so and not received a reply, please let me know as I had to delete most of my messages off my server as there were hundreds waiting to be downloaded (mostly spam and porn !!!!)....so once again sorry.... I am back at home now and fighting fit (well not quite but you know what I mean) so if you want to write to me, please feel free. I have also just took delivery (after 6 different fittings and no end of problems) of a caliper for my right leg so I am starting re-hab again and getting to grips with being upright again....feels good !!!!!. Wondering if anyone here is from the U.K and uses braces/calipers as I seem to be the only one in the re-hab department who uses them and all the physio's seem hell bent on putting me back in the wheelchair and not letting me use them much !!!!! Has anyone had any experiences of the British NHS in this regard. OK, better dash, got some walking practice to do ! Take care Stu

Hi Stu, welcome back. Won't the National Health pay for the old style polio/metal braces? They seem indestructible compared with the newer ones.
Glad you're feeling better.
