Hi matisse! I can usually find good alternatives to handicap spaces, but my chair doesn't fit in most regular stalls. So, you sometimes take WC parking spots and most of the time take WC bathroom stalls. Out of respect for the real wheeler you would like to become, I ask that you discontinue doing either.

I'll say it again, I am not a BIID supporter, but I'd rather have someone with BIID taking up a spot than, some kid with an expired placard who might have a had a broken foot a while ago still taking up the spot, or some fat ass who maybe should be walking a little more or whatever other questionable use of a placard. I'm sure if you saw him taking a spot, you probably wouldn't have any clue he's a faker, but you'd be happy someone in a chair is using the spot.

I find that disabled people themselves use disabled parking spots/ wheelchair spots that they don't "need". For example, my boyfriend and I have to travel to a nearby pool to shower as our bathroom isn't accessible. There are often disabled people in the stall with the ceiling lift and sling, even though their disabilities don't require that. They could easily use the other disabled changeroom that's bigger but with no lift and...less fancy (hence the reason they're in our much needed fancy one). Also, my boyfriend and I don't really need a wheelchair parking place as I can always let him out and pull into the spot. Someone who needs the space to transfer in to their chair, or a person who needs to walk a short distance would be better off with the space. My boyfriend still uses disabled parking stalls but really, we don't need them and he's a c3 quad. .. pretty legit disability. We use it as a perk to a life with many challenges. ... as do many disabled people I guess I personally think BIID is a challenging enough situation and counts just as much as other disabilities in this case.

I probably shouldn't comment as I'm unable to wrap my brain around this whole thread, but if he got approved by the moderator here then I guess he deals with challenging enough situation as it was put by vancityippy (Why don't I see your avatar image?). Disabled parking spots ... in no other country I have ever seen that many of them, and still, they are always taken ... they seem to be made available mostly for fat people anyway ...

Thank you @tommy . Avatar uploaded.
Anyhow, ya. I think growing up with an overwhelming desire to be paralyzed must be challenging. Being so fat you can barely walk must be challenging also.
Until I have walked a mile in someone's shoes, (or until someone's proven themselves to be a malicious person) I reserve judgement.
Ps. Vancouver's very accessible. Lots O parking spots. That helps
Pps. Thread derailed. Welcome to PD!

I'd rather have none of them take my spots. I find that disabled people themselves use disabled parking spots/ wheelchair spots that they don't "need". I don't do that, even though legally I am allowed to. Until I have walked a mile in someone's shoes, (or until someone's proven themselves to be a malicious person) I reserve judgement. He hasn't "walked" a mile in my shoes either. I am sure he stands up every day and probably also uses his legs inconsistent with an SCI in the ADA stall.

I don't know hoe to "quote" successfully so... matisse I didn't say "you hadn't walked in his shoes" I said I do not judge until I've walked in someone else's...I guess you do. I read a message board for teenagers, yes kids and teenagers, with BIID once. 14 year olds who wanted their spinal cords severed, were injecinng rotten chicken broth into their limbs and were obsessed daily about being disabled. I do not understand this psychological state but I do not need to understand to have compassion and empathy. This is a psychological condition with no cure. And the "harm" is minute. Are we to be outraged with trans women for making the female bathroom line one person longer? Why be angry at avery small group of vulnerable people when there are so many other groups and individuals doing intentional harm to others to be mad at?

I said I do not judge until I've walked in someone else's...I guess you do. Of course I do. It's extremely unpractical and virtually impossible to do otherwise, because we just cannot walk in someone else's shoes. You gave the example of someone proving themselves malicious, but you haven't walked in that malicious person's shoes either. I just draw a different line than you. I read a message board for teenagers, yes kids and teenagers, with BIID once. 14 year olds who wanted their spinal cords severed, were injecinng rotten chicken broth into their limbs and were obsessed daily about being disabled. Just because they want to be paralyzed does not mean they know they are ok with the pressure sores and other issues. And from what I have seen they do not live their lives without use of their legs--I remember one article where the person said she couldn't afford something. Well, we real wheelers don't have the choice to get something for ABs because we can't afford something for wheelers. If it is really that bad of a condition, then don't give yourself the choice to cheat. And the "harm" is minute. That's what all the ABs say when they use our spots/stalls, literally: "I'll just be a minute." Regardless, just because it's minute doesn't mean I have to excuse it. Why be angry at avery small group of vulnerable people when there are so many other groups and individuals doing intentional harm to others to be mad at? I replied on this point before....I don't see why I should excuse their conduct just because there is worse conduct out there.

For me it is just nice to have one less thing to be angry at.

I'd be willing to be supportive of BIID - but I'm not willing to support a BIID person's efforts and attempts to make use of wheelchair stalls and handicapped parking spaces. I'm glad you admit it, the next step is to stop doing it.

Are accessible parking spaces and bathroom stalls the holy grail of being disabled? @mjwheels can use my parking spot any time.

Personally, I just park in the back and roll up. There are people much worse than me that can use those spots, plus exercise lol. Bathroom stalls are a little more tricky, but hell, if you gotta go that bad you can figure it out and make it work. I think there are more important things to worry about than than that stuff.
I too, have questions, Sir. Mind if I PM you as well?

People with BIID aren't not the ones you need to worry about screwing with the "disabled world".

Matisse, you are welcome to send me a PM. We can have some real talk and I can answer questions. I wasn't super familiar with this forum and did not realize that I was stepping into some hot water. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and showing a very real perspective. Many more people feel the way that you do, I'm sure. I also need to thank those who've shared some rather supportive and uplifting words without really knowing me. Wow. You've responded to criticism with grace and handled the rest with humility. IMHO, you've displayed a level of maturity that is refreshing to see. Thank you and welcome again
