Is it something to be ashamed of if you don't work? I worked for years, but don't now, and you know what? I like it. I'm not hurting financially, as I got my house paid off, no car payment, and really,I don't need anything. i know my life would've been very different had I not gotten hurt at 21, but I was a blue collar worker- worked on a shipping floor for Defense Contractor. I wasn't crazy about it as a career, but it paid great. After my wreck I went back to college, and I had always hated school, but this time it was different. It became my mountain to climb. It took me many years, but i finally grad with a bachelor's degree in Mass Communication. I worked pt as a freelance music journalist. My interests were always in the arts, and marketing. I got a pt job to fund my recording i was doing, but it turned into a 17-year job. I rent to two guys in my house, and i do fine with money. i love having my time, even if it's just fucking off, like now. Some people work for years to get to retire, ie stop working. If you're happy and your needs are met what's wrong with bit?

Currently, I am a part-time motivational speaker, medical article editor, and consultant for a French branch of a US medical equipment company. I am a temporary full-time student in an apprenticeship in the pharmacy of one of the top teaching hospitals in the US. I'm also a grandmother. When do you have time for any fun?!??!

I do think that in some cases what you do as a career or your education can cause unfair judgement and or discrimination in some ways... People judge you by what you know and what you do.... Case in point... I'm a stay at home Mom... I have no degree... I tried to get one a few times but life and such just got in the way... I always wanted to be a stay at home Mom so i kind of have my dream job Now i'm in a situation where I need to change life and i kind of feel forced to get some formal education and choose a career so i have some hope of leaving my present situation (unhappy emotionally abusive marriage) and an opportunity to believe my life could be better, could be different. I have no idea or inclination towards anything at this point really. Hi i'm 36 and i don't know what i want to be when i grow up its frustrating but all that to say... i feel oftentimes my lack of work experience and education means people automatically assume i'm "less"... less intelligent, less motivated, less knowledgable... etc etc... but interacting in every day life with peers and in social situations... I'm effing Hermione about some things and people respect me because i have information that is beneficial to them... I'd like to think and hope that after a time talking to me people would realize i have viable skills and intelligence to offer a situation even tho i lack a fancy piece of paper that says i sat in a desk for so many hours and it bothers me how sometimes people regard people more highly because of a degree than someone without it... It is an "easy conversation" but its a conversation that can also be divisive etc etc... ya know seeking a "college educated" person in a personal ad for example... you could be missing out on some really well rounded intelligent people who have valuable life experience beyond whats taught in a classroom but they might not respond to you because you've said "College educated" and or you might disregard them because they're not and miss out... I feel like i'm preaching to the choir a bit lol

I want to add one more thing. Well, maybe two...1st, being a quad automatically limits you greatly to what you can do, and as one that pushes, it's even more limiting. I was lucky to find a job very near me that didn't require a lot of physical things, but I'd done interviews after college in the field of Public Relations,, and i could see things weren't going to work out from the beginning. It was discouraging. 2nd thing i'd like to say is, not everyone is cut out for brainy jobs. I'm as smart as anyone about some things, but I lack significantly with organization, details, math, discipline, etc. I'm brilliant with ideas, marketing, music, writing-ideas (not skills), but terrible with computers, coding , anything technical. Some of us that find themselves as a quad just don't have the skill set that lends itself to working full-time. My father was same way, a musician/artist, hated any confines. i suspect i inherited some of that.

We are programed to think that life should be all about work, career, etc when there is so much more than that. I'm actually a recovering workaholic so your story is inspirational to me and something I look up to!

Hey, thanks Jess...I worked with some old folks that just couldn't give it up. They had plenty of money, and they would work their ass off, even with deterioration of health. They just were bored at home, and honestly, when my job fell apart I was worried'd be same way, but now I'm comfortable just not working for da man. 😀

I'm one of those annoying people whose resume is a couple pages long, and that's the edited version. When people ask me what do I do for work, I usually just pick something. But honestly? I feel like I don't really do anything specific. I just go where I feel useful. That's very interesting, lucretia! I've always found that I could see myself doing a lot of different things, or at least try them for a certain amount of time. But it's simply not possible to just work in every job for, let's say, three months and then decide wether you want to change again. My goal has always been to find a work place where I like to be, more or less irregardless of how much money that would give me as long as I could survive with it. Has it been easy to convince bosses that you can start this job although you didn't do anything like that before? That's a big problem here. People only hire you, if you have at least a bit of education or work experience in the respective field. In the end, my career path (until now) looks pretty linear, though. 5 years of university and a job right after finishing. I've been doing this for over 2 years now (publishing business) although I know it's not my dream job. I try work in other areas for a few days each year.

I think every topic has the potential to be divisive. That doesn't mean we don't discuss them. Some of us have had linear career paths, others of us have not. Some of us have pursued higher education, others of us have not. But, what we do with our waking hours IS relevant. What we choose to spend our time doing says something about us. Not everyone is going to feel comfortable talking about every subject. But in a community where deep topics are interspersed with the online equivalent of small talk, there will always be other discussions to participate in. I think this is a very good question, asking about work, I do this too when I want to get to know someone. I think in certain situations it's not relevant or adequate though. Not the case of this thread, please don't get me wrong! IMO it's great to look a bit deeper too, and ask ourselves not only what we're doing but also why, and if necessary and possible, change paths. Nowadays the word workaholic is frequently used as something positive. There's even a ted talk in defense of workaholism. I think it's controverse, and that's one of the reasons I'm a bit sensitive about this subject. I really see both sides of the coin though. I don't want to make those feel less who invest a lot of time money social life health etc on their carriers. I do this too, in a contradictory way. But I believe there are different ways of dealing with this topic, up to everybody to decide what's best without feeling less.

My intent was not to create a debate or make anyone uncomfortable./ So much of our lives is defined by what we do. Just want to know what others on here are up to.
FWIW: I hate my job lol

nor was my statement intended to be inflammatory and i apologize if it was interpreted that way... Asking about people's jobs is a good conversation started and lends interest to a person gives you a sense of who they are an what they enjoy/hate... I just dislike judgement lol
