I've been wondering about why this question is one of the first asked when I get to know someone
I don't understand why it matters lol. I'm curious about WHY the person chose it for a living. And about their ambitions motives plans goals dreams...
I'm German teacher

For many people financial comfort is a big deal in relationships. As for my job, it doesn't really have a title. I work for my step fathers IT business doing misc things, mostly web and graphic design but there are not enough projects for that to be a full job, so I have done data entry, sales, and other random things. My name tag reads "Web and Graphics Specialist" but only because we didn't know what else to call it.

What if the person is rich and decided to be something usually less payed, just for fun or IDK? What if usually less paid pays a lot more than one can imagine? Let's pretend money mattered. I'd rather see the potential of the person than what he's currently doing. I don't think it's just about money though. Edit: it's a question asked not only for relationships. And I'm being annoying

And I'm being annoying It's not always reflective of the persons personality, but it often can be. I find people's career interests and goals one of their most unique attributes, it can say a lot about their way of thinking and their personality. Also, it usually leads to more conversation naturally, which is very valuable when you first meet someone. If their career is important to them, they'll elaborate on it. If it's not, they'll usually say "I hate my job but eventually I want to X Y Z".

I ask people this question all the time as a way to get to know them better. Not because I'm trying to ascertain their wealth or just to make small talk. It gives you insight into their level of education, whether they're are creative or analytical. Do they have medical knowledge or do they understand the challenges education. To me it's a question that can give you great understanding of someone's background and what their current life is like and can lead to wonderful conversations. I'm a curious person and I genuinely want to get to know the people I meet on PD and IRL.
To answer the original question I'm a marketing manager. But what I think is interesting about that is I started out as a Radio/TV major but switch to advertise my freshman year. I broke my neck during my senior year. My switching majors was quite fortuitous for me because there are very few obstacles working from a chair in the marketing/advertising world and there would be a lot in radio or television.
See how there can be an interesting story behind a simple question?

I have worked at very different companies: during my study I did an internship at Aon-COFCO. That is an American-Chinese insurance broker, located in Shanghai. Had a great time there, doing market research. After my internship I returned to Holland and worked at ABN AMRO Bank as a contract manager. Got fired because of my disability (manager Saïd he doubted whether I was just phisically disabled). After that I was offered a temp job at various other departments of the same bank. Some time later I got a job at Tilburg University as Exchange & Study Abroad advisor for students. After 11 months my job was made redundant and here I am, looking for a new job once again...

Is it something to be ashamed of if you don't work? I worked for years, but don't now, and you know what? I like it. I'm not hurting financially, as I got my house paid off, no car payment, and really,I don't need anything. i know my life would've been very different had I not gotten hurt at 21, but I was a blue collar worker- worked on a shipping floor for Defense Contractor. I wasn't crazy about it as a career, but it paid great. After my wreck I went back to college, and I had always hated school, but this time it was different. It became my mountain to climb. It took me many years, but i finally grad with a bachelor's degree in Mass Communication. I worked pt as a freelance music journalist. My interests were always in the arts, and marketing. I got a pt job to fund my recording i was doing, but it turned into a 17-year job. I rent to two guys in my house, and i do fine with money. i love having my time, even if it's just fucking off, like now.
