I'm still fairly new here, but in my interactions so far, I discovered that many things remain to be said about blindness and what it entails exactly. Many people seem to have questions, and at times misconceptions about how we live and breathe realistically, influenced by literature, movies or seris, that are stereotyped to a more or lesser degree.
That, and the fact I really don't mind talking about what blindness does and doesn't do to me, is why I had the idea of creating this tread, where all of you could ask anything at all you would like to know about the blind live, and where all your possible assumptions could be reality checked. The common,, the weird, and the very personal, they'd be all welcome here. I will definitely try to answer them all as detailed as possible and other blind board members are off course very welcome to shine in.
Maybe some nice discussions and who knows even a quite comprehensive blindness FAQ could come out of this.
There you go, the floor is yours ...

Hello blindlover thanks for the invite! I’d be really curious to know how you prepare when you know you will visit a new place for let’s say traveling? Well honestly, when I'm travelling, I usually do it with other people and as I like spontaneity, I usually don't prepare that much. Travelling for me personally is also more about meeting people and experiencing their version of a place, than working through a list of attractions. That is why, when I visited NYC last year, I looked on this site called couch surfing for local people that could show me a few bits of the city that meant something to them. This trip was originally planned with my parrents, but I ended up spending more than half the time with other people I met, it was truely unforgettable. Sometimes I like to go to big raves and dance festivals, and then finding a good raving buddy that is happy to keep an eye on you while partying and thinks to find you at the end of an event is really key. When it comes to transport, I use regular route planning apps for route and flights to see how I get there and book tickets. In general, I know of a few blind people who moved allong cities alone, but I've not done it so far. Maybe it's for the future, although I do like travelling in company much more. I hope that answers your question a bit, but don't hesitate to ask more

Oh, that’s very cool, blindlover! Thank you! In case that you are blind since birth - how is your concept of colors? I am indeed blind from birth, so you're in luck . My concept of colours is two fold. On the one hand I know colour as a physical fenomenon, where different surfaces tent to reflect light waves in different ways. Surfaces that reflect only the longer waves will be red, surfaces that reflect the short waves only will be perceived as Violet. All other collours in between are combinations of different parts of this wavelength range. On the other hand, they are also a social construct. They are linkt to certain objects, grass should bee green, when its healthy, and emotions, red is not only the collor of burning fire, but also of love, passion and rage. These links are learnt by being part of the sighted social world and through media and literature. They are also completely arbitrary for us. You could compare it a bit to how you would learn the signification of a word, there's also no apparent reazon why when you can't see, you're blind, and not let's say plod. as you can see, there's nothing visual about how v" we see colours, cause we don't, after all .

It really means a lot to me, I just think it has a broader definition in my case. I'd say that beauty is everything that evokes intence emotions of joy and happyness, but also deep realisation, or melancholy. This can be caused by everything, a conversation, a thought, music, a touch or simply an emotion that appears in my thoughts. This account is off course very personal and other blind people may think something completely different.

Thank you, blindlover, for this very enlightening explanation. I always find the idea funny that as a matter of fact we never know to which extent the way we perceive the world around us is the same as others. Maybe what I see as black, another person sees as white, but we just got used to name it in this specific way and assume that others to perceive exactly the same. It’s also interesting to see how different cultures shape the language, the existence of words in one language that other languages don’t have because the concept just doesn’t exist... this is going too far now. Anyways, thanks a lot. And btw, even though I am not specifically a blind-dev (at least not that I knew of it), I think you look really great on your profile pic!

Over all, i'd say my hearing takes the first place , since that's the sence that enables to communicate and perceive things at the greatest distance. Serious pice of bad luck that's also the one I'm losing too huh? A honourable mention has to go to touch in situations where hearing is not helpful, or just not as informative, such as when eating, reading braille, or in intimate contact with someone close to me.

This is a great thread, thank you for starting it! Nice profile picture too.
So is blindness something you think about often? Or is it more that other people are more conscious of? Is it in the front of your mind, or the background in daily life?

What are your dream like? For people who have ever seen in their lives, even for rather short periods, dreams are very visual. However, as I never have, my dreams are based on how I experience reality, mainly Based on sound, smell, touch, and yes, sometimes even taste. In my case, my dreams also come with intence emotions from time to time, that I then feel even hours after waking up. I can have deep meaningfol conversations in my dreams with the people I dream about that I even remember afterwards . Also, it happens a lot that I have information over my environment I shouldn't have if I were blind, but somehow I just know where things are, still without any visual iimagination off course. Finally, sometimes there's a soundtrack to my dreams, usually with lots of epic strings, sometimes derived of existing songs, sometimes new compositions that I then try to remember as well as possible.
