My husband works at one of those big investment banks. Although this article quotes numbers like "$420,000 per employee" possibly swelling to "$500,000 per employee", that's sort of bullshit. The people at the top get way way way more and the people at the bottom get way less.
That said, yeah. Bonus time is always sort of fun. And the money they throw at employees is insane.

Going from a high powered, high paying job, to something short of that, would be difficult in the absence of being indpendently wealthy or retirement. Ya, but sometimes life just kicks you in the ass, and you either adjust- or get adjusted (my dad used to quote from that country song about "attitude adjustment")- either way it's a loss, and a blow to your self-worth. And I'd venture to guess that most of us are NOT independently wealthy or retired. (Except for Creative-E, that is... ) Ahem. If I stopped working today, I'd be worrying about a mortgage payment in the not-so-distant future, too.

Just wanted to clarify a few things then add my 2 cents. I think that being on SSI is perfectly fine if there are reasons you can't work. Hell, I thank God it was there for me right after my accident. I would have never been able to work at that time. I was more worried about how to get dressed and eat, working would have been impossible. The problem I have is with those who can work and choose not to, then complain about not getting enough from SSI.
I'm interested in this concept that if you work full time or have a good paying job, you have no time for family or friends. I work full time and make a good living and still have plenty of time for others. I even went from a high paying job in business to take a lower paying job as a recreation therapist, but only to get more enjoyment in my work. I don't make 150k a year but I have everything I need and money left over at the end of the month. I guess money has not been a big motivator in my life. I have to pay my bills but other than that, happiness is much more important to me...

The majority of us work full-time, make a reasonably average wage and still have time for family, friends, relationships and whatnot. For me, it's not about the money or how many "toys" I can have. It's about keeping life in balance.

Personally, I love groceries, paying the light bill, and getting my car repaired.
Oh, wait...that's what I can afford to do, not what I want to do...lol.

Funny how "making a good living and being happy" turned into "barely being able to pay for the basics of life and not owning anything". lol I guess the question is.. how often do you want to go to Vegas? How many stereos or other toys do you need? or how young do you want to be when you retire? After managing a bank, I've learned that this is more about how smart you are with your money rather than how much you make.

Well, I just bought a very nice townhouse, have a decent semi-new SUV and manage to dress myself in good clothes, so now my priorities are to be able to take care of this lifestyle.
