I also prefer speaking.
RyooT, what if when each of us is giving our commentary, we use whichever method appeals to us and everyone else does not say anything. So I would give my feedback by voice and there wouldn't be other voices distracting. You would give your feedback by text and there wouldn't be other text distracting.
Then after everyone has given commentary, we could open to discussion and let things get a little more crazy (with the moderator, I'm assuming Lucretia, keeping things from getting too out of hand).

OK when we starting? I would rather go on the second/third time as I am working on something but it isn't in a form I could email over at the moment.

I think a generic email is a good idea. Need a witty address.

I'd be happy to be in as well. Be it writing or speaking. I've got something which might be the first chapter of something longer or a (not yet very devy) short story in itself. Honestly, I am scared to hell to share it as this intro is quite close to myself. Besides, English is not my first language and I know that I write in rather long sentences. But if I am going to take it further I would very much appreciate to get opinions about how you see my charactes, how they might develop and in what episodes you could imagine seeing them in. Overall, the workshop thing sounds less scary than having my text beta read only.

[quote author=l board=writing thread=4103 post=86264 time=1348352105 I know what you mean, a few of my stories I am working on don't start imediately with devy moments so not to worry. It will teach us patience

Lucretia, since this is your brain-child, would you like to be the one in charge and making the decisions about how to organize and run it? I think we could all doddle about it forever, so you'll probably need to say: This is how it's going to be, now submit! lol I also know that I have a tendency to be bossy and if I don't keep check of myself, I'm likely to take over. I like to think it's part of being action-driven. When I think something is a good idea, I pursue it immediately and relentlessly!

I am also a little... well, I won't say bossy per se, but maybe gung-ho/overly enthusiastic But I will say that in all instances, I just want the work to be the best it can be so that more people will want to read the writer's work. And I work very hard with a writer to make sure that her voice comes through. I think that if we start from that level and promise a kind and patient respect for one another, we'll be successful. I think it'll be fun Don't be scared!

I have workshop experience as well as fiction editing, so if Lucretia is too busy, I could step up if necessary.

If I could make a suggestion: For those who consider submitting, please include some notes as to what you think you need the most help on. I think that could help in several ways. First, if you are admitting right out of the gate that you need help with grammar or whatever, we can either take care of it quickly or simply agree that it's a concern and move on to other stuff. Nearly any good writer can help with grammar, but very few are in tune with the twists and turns of writing about devvy issues But I also think that it might be a good check to see if the issues you're seeing in your own writing match what other people see.

Yay! This is exciting! I may have something. Not sure yet. I was so sad about Jesse yesterday I came up with a whole new story concept unlike anything I've written before, and I mean it... For one thing, it has a para MC, which I didn't think I'd write about...don't want to say more than that right now, though. As per Jane's suggestion, I'm personally from the school of "the writing should speak for itself," but do agree if there is some major issue or concern the writer wants us to know about, then thats OK.

Excellent! I'll try to get something in to the gmail address today. If more than three come in before I submit, I can definitely wait until the next time too.

How long should the submissions be? I assume it sholdn't be too long, to keep it manageable, but how much is too much? And can it be something already published? A first chapter of a story perhaps?

Who wants to go first? I know a few have said they have stuff ready, but we should have at least three solid commitments to start with. If we have three pieces in by the end of this week, we can have next week to read and make notes, and can workshop via Skype the following weekend. The witty address is: workshopsubmission@gmail.com. I briefly checked out google docs, but didn't feel like reading all about it, downloading, etc. since everyone is raring to go. If simple gmail access is too cumbersome, we'll revise as we go along. I can moderate the first workshop, and we can take turns with whoever feels like they want to lead it that month. That way, no one person is always planning, and everyone gets a chance to try something new, if they want. I personally don't have any preference to type of piece, but I suspect most will be dev or dis related, but to my mind that is not a requirement. Google docs is actually really easy. If you have a gmail or google account, all you do is upload your .doc file, then you can either manually add email addresses to share it with or simply share via the link. I personally think that would be the easiest way to handle things, but I've used google docs a lot to share docs with groups, so I could be biased. How are we going to access the stories once they're sent in if we aren't using google docs?
