strap newbies in their chair Finding volunteering devs for that on the board won't be much of a challenge. You might want to schedule a small time buffer before the part where they subsequently get thrown into a river though. Calling someone out publically based on a gut instinct is potentially quite damaging to a person's feelings and online reputation if they turn out not to be a fake though, isn't it nordic ? Things tend to escalate very quickly into a witch hunt and it maybe hard to shake that negative image off that people have of you, if you are later proved not to be a faker. My point entirely. Something always sticks. Still, I hesitate to condemn it as witch hunting altogether. As I said before, I get how the ones who went through an emotional nightmare are eager to prevent the same thing happening to others. Once bitten, twice shy. Nevertheless, finger-pointing based on some vague suspicion simply isn't cool. I'm convinced the better way to go in that case would be getting in touch with the person in question via PM or involving a mod until there is an actual proof at hand.

That's a bold "nevertheless" and "convinced" given your lack of experience with fakers....... I regret not going by my gut before, when posters have said things that are within my area of experience/knowledge. I recall one faker on another website who claimed to be a Canadian lawyer at a bank and what he (she, it turned out to be) said just struck me as wrong. I didn't say anything because I did as you now suggest--I gave the benefit of the doubt. On this board, I don't see that calling out a potential faker publicly has become a problem. I doubt it has been done more than half a dozen times over many years.

This is a good reminder. Also remember that the chat room linked at the top here is not moderated by us, and non-members can come in. Also all these posts can be viewed by anyone, not just members. So although we try to keep fakers out, they still have other ways they might try to contact you.
On this same topic, we recently received notification from Proboards that the member using the name Drakette has been posting stolen photos under a false identity. He/she has been banned, but if you are in contact with this person off the board, be warned that he/she is most likely catfishing.
If you discover stolen photos or fake identities here, please let the moderators know ASAP.

If I've got a faker radar, then it's not working. How do you spot these people?! Thanks, Bruce x Dear Bruce let me give you the official "How to gut-feel a total fake dev"-guide. With dudes pretending to be female devs, it's actually very easy. Like @mrniceguy said, Drakette was EXTREMELY enthusiastic about hooking up from her first post on. And not in the "I'm looking for my soulmate"- kind of way, but in the "I'm so horny I'll take any wheeler now" kind of way. Which is suspicious enough already. Secondly, she flirted aggressively with all the guys here, and I really mean ALL of them. And no, not like you do, Inky, but more like this: "Oh you guys are all SO sexy, every last one of you. I would want to go out and have sex with ALL of you, because ALL disabled guys are soo sexy, and as a Dev, I would take ANY disabled guy ." This makes it very obvious to me that "drakette" is a disabled dude, because only a clueless disabled dude dreaming of meeting a dev would think being a dev means you find every single disabled guy on the planet unbelievably sexy. Other red flags in that department are statements like: "I've AWAYS dated disabled guys only and have ALWAYS been TOTALLY open about it. All my friends think I'm crazy, but I DON'T CARE!" As for female devs pretending to be someone they are not or making stories of relationships up: When a dev writes about how she met her boyfriend, what their relationship is like and what he thinks of her devness, always ask yourself: Could this exact text be on the fiction blog and totally give me a warm fuzzy feeling? Is the elusive boyfriend EXTREMELY communicative, open, funny, kind-hearted and manly? (And then ask yourself: Is this like real men really behave?) Does he see her devness as a gift from heaven because he never thought a woman could ever love his body? And does said dev repeat over and over again how perfect her boyfriend is and how sexy and what kind of disability he has? If you can answer one or more of these questions with a YES, your faker-gut-feeling should spring alive. There is so much more to be said about faker red flags, but I'll leave it at that for now.

How can you sense that someone is a faker?! I never had even heard about this til Emma mentioned it to me and I still don't get what the point of faking does. Paranoid forever now. Lol.

Cake pretty much explained the Drakette fake spotting tricks. I'm not sure if you can go back and read her posts but if you can you should now see some red flags. I'm happy to send some fake spotting tips to interested people however am not going to post much here since that just gives the fakes ideas of how to get around it. Pm me if you are interested. Fake devs happen but IMO the real issue for us devs are the fake disabled guys. There are many more of them and you do need to be very careful like Inigo initially stated with this thread.

Faking profile in such a niche community? Well as the Chinese proverb goes "WE LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES"

She only posted once or twice since I registered on here and I was wondering what happened to her. I guess she was too good to be true.
