There are not many people in the world who want to fake a disability, but those who do it tend to target devs so we see a very high percentage of them here. As for why people do this, either they have BIID and want to be perceived as really disabled, or they are pretenders who have a sexual fetish for being thought of as disabled. Whether it's BIID or a fetish, they have a strong compulsion to do this, so they can be very persistent. There are several we have banned repeatedly who keep trying to come back. They want devs to admire their "disability."
If anyone pursues you very aggressively via PM, or seems to good to be true, be suspicious. It's not at all hard to tell who is active here--everyone's post count appears right under their profile picture (although it may not appear on a phone or tablet). You can also click on the profile and see everything that person has posted.
There is good advice in this thread for spotting a faker. Always ask to talk on video if you are considering anything serious. Even then it's not 100% certain they are for real, but if someone has a million excuses why they can't get on video to chat with you, they are definitely faking.
As for the dev fakers, it's not that they are pretending to be devs when they're not. Usually it's a woman pretending to be younger, or more conventionally attractive, or claiming to be single, concealing that she is married. Or it's a gay male dev pretending to be a female dev to flirt with disabled guys who are straight.
And a reminder again, if anyone receives harassing PMs or discovers a member here has a deceptive profile, please let the moderators know. Please don't feel you have to keep it to yourself, or protect people who have violated the board guidelines.
