There is zero medical reason to amputate just to "feel better". It's not comparable to a transgender person, as there are good medical reasons to do that plus doesn't necessarily hinder any bodily ability. My reason to say I hope not isn't to cause a commotion for its own sake. It's to say that I hate to see anyone DESIRE disability and follow through. Treating BIID is one thing. But encouraging maladaptive behavior? It's only a psychological mess here, can't end well. It's also to say it's plain insulting to see someone desire a disability. It's not something to desire having at all. It's not good. It deliberately diminishes disability into an incidental trait. It's something to overcome, not to seek. |

I tried and tried to let this one go, but I can't. I understand where you're coming from, being offended by someone seeking to be disabled, but how have you helped the situation? Perhaps you should read a little more into BIID and what it entails before you opt to be so judgemental. I have worked with people who have BIID. I've seen them struggle, attempt other therapies, and try to "fix" themselves without extreme measures. For some, nothing works except that final, extreme measure. Enlighten me, how is it any more acceptable to fulfill transgendered desires with surgery to "feel better"? Why shouldn't people walking that line have to just deal with it the same way you're suggesting people with BIID do? Your opinion is your opinion, but if this is how you're going to express it, by adding to the psychological mess, then maybe you should keep it to yourself. And no, for the record, I do not have BIID. Like I said, I'm sorry, but I couldn't let this go. I will graciously await my punishment for ranting now! Now, to put this thread back on track. I'm not condemning BIID, I'm condemning the amputation of limbs as itself a good thing in any attitude or preference. Struggle is okay, but we're talking about amputation to serve a desire as though desire is always good if it involves consent or any mention of the world "feel better". We're talking about someone choosing to be disabled. It's deliberately reducing yourself. SRS for transgender person involves no destruction for a body part, albeit massive changes. Gender is heavily psychological. It cannot be equated to dissatisfaction of a body part alone. It bugs me so much to see it as good in any sense to literally remove body parts necessary to live. It's essentially saying "oh disability isn't so bad, better to be happy in your own mind, the status of your body is no big deal."
I'm only vocal about it because encouraging or being happy for a person planning to be an amputee diminishes what it means to be disabled. Often, it's going to be about overcoming obstacles. Anyone seeking obstacles turns that upside down. Seeking obstacles is not admirable. Yes, the psychology involved isn't simple, but an admirable person overcomes their obstacles. No matter the justification, deliberate planned amputation is creating the very thing to overcome, disability.
And by overcome, I mean doing things like adopting technology to make life better and make disability a non-issue.
Again, I'm not being mean for its own sake. Disability isn't easily or often discussed, so it's especially important to discuss it openly in a community like PD.

If you substitute "planning to be an amputee" with "wanting to have sex with an amputee" you can use the exact same argument to condemn devotees. Just sayin. As for the original post, it is naive for BIID or pretenders to assume that devotees want to be with them. As you can see in the threads above, some devs are ok with it but many are not. |

From my own personal opinion I think it is disgusting. I am disabled, and to me someone seeking it is seriously fucked up. I understand that having BIID is difficult to deal with, but it is hard for me to empathize. I don't wish to condemn people who seek disabilities, but my gut reaction is anger and confusion. From a purely objective standpoint I suppose I would have no problem with it as long as someone who, for example, becomes a sak by choice, does not accept disability money from the government, or take up handicap parking spots. If someone chooses to acquire a disability and can pay for all the expenses themselves (being a gimp is EXPENSIVE!!!!), then go for it! Once someone starts taking resources from people who actually are not disabled by choice, then there is a problem. Otherwise I suppose from a completely logical perspective it isn't really an issue. I had considered making a topic about this a few weeks ago, but I did a search and saw it had already been discussed many times Inky, I found your post very interesting, and yes, it did make sense to me.
