Last weekend I joined PD and coincidently two days later I see this at the book store. And then this week I saw ads on TV for the movie. It's a love story about a small town girl who falls in love with a quad (SCI) she works for. Of course in real life the actor is AB, which is sooo annoying, as I'm sure there are several disabled actors that could've played the role. I'm assuming too, they'll skip over the non-glamorous parts of quad care and only show the sweet and seductive scenes of her shaving and grooming him. So devs is this something you will be excited about seeing even though she's not a dev? Will it push your buttons? Are you planning viewing parties (can I come)? Have any of you read the book? If so I'm guessing it's way better than the movie. One last note: Everyone in the film has lovely British accents too boot, so us Yanks will eat that shit up.

We have actually had discussions about the movie further down in the General Section. I read the book and thought it was nicely written, but it wasn't pushing any dev buttons. It was just a good story. I would like to see the movie just because I want to see if it is somehow devy to me and how it compares to the book. Of course I think all devs are curious about movies/shows who deal with disabled characters. Yeah, unfortunately the main disabled character is played by an able bodied actor, but beggars can't be choosers...

many of us have seen the movie trailer and read the book. I wouldn't even go so far as to call it a romance novel. The movie looks much more romantic than the book was they barely even kiss realistically. I didn't even find tho book to be that well written. I will see the movie just cuz i think SEEING it will make it devvy but i don't have high hopes really the overall story just leaves a bad taste. There have been a few other discussions as Dani said you may enjoy searching for.

Sorry I created a new thread, I guess I should've searched before I posted. Newbie mistake I won't spend money to see it in theaters, I'll have to wait to see it. I'm most curious to see how realistic they portray quad life.

from the chair already u can see a few mistakes On this poster? What do you mean? (am I being a bad dev?) I can't handle how handsome he is, though. That smile... Those eyes... I want to run my fingers through his hair. And he's got a perfect bone structure... Sigh

yeah me too..tear that poster ok. in the book he cant move his fingers i mean as far as i can remember. so he should at least have a pneumatic controlled chair? and if he cant move his fingers..i guess his neck support should be bad enough to need head support? and no straps

I think I remember that he was able to move one or even both of his arms a teeny tiny bit (just enough to not need an even more massive chair with chin/sip n puff control I guess *rolls eyes*). And yeah, I've been wondering about the head rest, too, because, if he can't move his shoulders at all (which apparently he can't judging by the trailer), I'm guessing he'd probably need one?! I know of guys who don't need a head rest on their power chairs for head support, though, but they still have it because they have electronic control buttons in and/or intertwined with the head rest. Oh and the belt... My guy never uses his.

the way his body is described in the book injury level etc leaves a lot open to interpretation... He can move his fingers a small bit, presumably enough to control his chair, but not arms? I think in one of the movie trailers there's a close up of him moving his fingers to touch her. It was NOT very well researched in my opinion in terms of realistic representation of the injury it gives. Also, his lack of headrest etc was explained to me that it would depend on where they fused the vertebrae etc I don't know... for me it will be more devvy to see it vs read it but in reading it the way its defined is a stretch i almost can't believe it got published with them like didn't they do any research? it was like she did a basic google about it and ran with it...

As a C4 quad I know a bit about these chairs, so let me share He uses a Permobil F5, which is their latest model and he drives it with a joystick. Did I read somewhere that he's a C5? It's perfectly possible for a C5 to drive with a joystick, though you might want a custom grip on it to make it easier such as a large ball or one your hand fits in. He could also have all the buttons he needs on the joystick panel. The headrest is optional for C4/C5, though I think most use it. I have a similar permobil (C400) and I use a headrest where I have the chair's on-off switch. It also let's me rest my head when I recline the back. I don't use the headrest for support during normal use and for special occasions I can take it off completely. Incidentally I drive with sip and puff and my chair is a bit smaller than the F5. If he is supposed to be C5 so he could do without it permanently if he chose to. Others have noted that he sits too still, that a C5 or even C4 would move around more, e.g. when talking, which I agree with. That's uninspired acting though (not withstanding his good bone structure ), not a problem with the props. In that sense, I thought Redmayne's portrayal of Hawking was much better.

I'm sure us quads and devs could punch a hundred holes in this movie. That's why I want go see it, plus she is cute as can be.

It's not him being a C5 and driving with a joystick I can't get over. I know that's a thing IRL. It's that he's supposed to be a C5, but I think I remember in the book he has some hand movement, but no arm function. I know every SCI is different, but that doesn't make sense to me and it just seems so convenient. Ugh. That's what makes me upset, that she made him so perfectly well fitting to being a high quad but having this exact function for not having to use the sip n puff or chin control. Just because it would be in the way when they kiss, if you ask me. Given the descriptions we get, she could have easily made him a C4 with no movement whatsoever below the shoulder, but that would've caused him to have to have a chin control or sip n puff and that's not glamorous enough or probably just "too much" for the audience to handle.

I'm also amazed how he looks exactly like the quads I know!

Yeah, I know, I read the book. I was so looking forward to the sex scene(s) and was so disappointed to find out there weren't any (my friend who had read the book before me told me). I still kept reading and yeah there's only maybe a handful of scenes where they kiss (if even that). But you know for example the scene at the wedding, they don't kiss, but they get close. The chin control would've been in the way there. I know from experience haha.
