Clearly whoever said that was silly, and not a woman nor lover of shoes. I am a firm believer in retail therapy, and have been dealing with quite a lot lately and decided to treat myself to a much needed shopping spree that included the happiest pair of yellow patent heels ever. It seemed like a slightly appropriate picture to post here, and I can't help but share the joy of these shoes. ![](http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a241/drecore222/GetAttachment-2.jpg)

Despite what we tell you, or you may think - men subscribe to retail therapy as well - I could use a little of that these days - damn my empty wallet.

They should reword it to say "money can't guarantee happiness."
I have to admit I love to shop, but I go about it in a completely different way than women. I do most of it online, looking for good deals on eBay, or some of the big e-tailers. And it's always some sort of electronics or gadget.

"Happiness" is such a subjective term. Maslow's hierarchy of needs again comes to bear. I think that most people are incapable of true self-actualization, due primarily to the unrealistic and sometimes schizoid media deluge of what should define our expectations of joy, pleasure and contentment. Money just cannot purchase a feeling or dispense with long-held anxieties. But it can lift us above the rat race and give us a real taste of freedom. That would be enough for me.

Money does not buy happiness or contentment. Some of the wealthiest people I know seem to be the least content. Seems to me that happiness and contentment is also a choice, an attitude, a decision- after the hierarchy those basic needs are filled. (Esquire- have not thought about that since psy101!!) And somewhere in that big picture of happiness is finding where we serve others best and our purpose on this earth. The older I get the more I realize the happier we are when we put others before ourselves. It would be so much easier if it were all about shoes. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Some of the most wealthy people are the most lost as well - I firmly believe that everybody needs something to strive for in life - as long as they feel whatever it is, is not totally and constantly out of reach. I would put what you say, a slightly different way because always putting others first, is generally not happiness. To me a major element of happiness is giving of yourself to others - that act of giving, can make you happy indeed ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) .

I am not a greedy human being, my post was tongue in cheek and I was having a little fun after a shopping spree buying some fabulous shoes. However, I do beilieve as women we don't put ourselves first often enough. We look out for others so frequently that we fall to the bottom of the barrell, so why not justify some retail therapy, or a make over. We should count too, after all. SO, lesson number one, stop taking everything so seriously. Lesson number two, buy some fabulous new shoes. Lesson number three buy some fabulous new shoes for someone you love. haha

Nice shoes Annie! I'm all for a little retail therapy myself once in a while... particularly during this gross wet winter we're having this year. I'm curious about your tattoo, what's its story?

haha...yeah jason, i'd rather be miserable with money than miserable without!! Actually, Reader's Digest had an article on 'happiness' and pointed out a survey that tried to measure happiness, and found that Americans are far from being the happiest. In fact, some of the poor 3rd world countries ranked higher - which I can believe! However, they also found that you need to have a certain amount of money to relieve the stresses that can break anyone's happiness. But after those basic needs are met, then it's up to other factors to be happy....attitude being the biggest!!
Giving of yourself to someone 'deserving' can be very empowering, ad I love that, but I've also had blood-suckers around me in life, and been been hurt by people, so I'm wary about who I help - not that I have much, but I do live without the financial stress that feels terrible inside. I had that sick feeling in my belly as a kid, and it hurts. It's made me fearful of ever returning to poverty.
Nothing wrong with a little shoe therapy...hell, I'll buy da shoes for the right legs!!! : )

Tony, I don't think it could be said much better - I agree with your sentiments and have had similar experiences of my own as well...
